WhatsApp's New Update Means You Can Now Send Messages Offline image

WhatsApp's New Update Means You Can Now Send Messages Offline

Yesterday, WhatsApp rolled out a major update to its ever-expanding mobile community.

The big change being users can now send messages even while offline. Before now, users could draft out messages offline but couldn’t send them because the send button only worked online. All that is changed now though. How this works is simple; while offline, every message sent queues up and then delivers once the device establishes a working internet connection. This update is available on both iOS and Andorid devices. Considering the big changes the Application has undergone in recent times, this is a small but without any doubt a very useful tweak.

Other changes include the photo attachment limit which has now been increased from 10 to 30 photos per message, and a complete redesign of its storage usage menu within the settings tab.

We Can’t Wait To Find Out The Future Of Linda Ikeji’s Social Networking Platform image

We Can’t Wait To Find Out The Future Of Linda Ikeji’s Social Networking Platform

Can one become a tech entrepreneur without knowing how to write code? Linda Ikeji has perhaps just given the perfect answer to this question. The buzz about “LIS” has been on for a while now but how will I know? – I happen to avoid Linda Ikeji’s blog like a plague.

Linda Ikeji launched her very own social Networking platform yesterday and she’s calling it Linda Ikeji Social. LIS isn’t just another Nairaland or Naijapals, it is a platform much like Facebook, Path, and Twitter but with an advantage of direct wealth creation through a few mechanisms. According to Linda Ikeji, she is sharing some of her money with users.

Anyhoo, after a lot of hesitation, I decided to sign up. Mostly for the sake of a review if I’m going to be honest. The platform seems to run really well before you sign up. But just after you get in, everything becomes so unappealing, tasteless and if I may say “rushed”. I wouldn’t be too critical of LIS yet though, the money-making part of it is what will bring people on board, 100% sure about that.

So let’s get into a few things we’ve learned so far

Your homepage displays the menu tab on the extreme left, and moving right, you have the main section subdivided into News and Activities.

If you notice clearly, the News section takes its feed directly from the Linda Ikeji blog which made me realize what her plan probably is – to slowly shift her fan base to this new platform and kill off the blog.

Just after that is something of a shopping section which I really don’t understand yet. Who sells these items? Linda? Konga? Jumia? DealDey? If these are from users to other users, who is to tell the authenticity of these products? Or is this OLX Social?

How do you make money off this?

If you have the patience, watch Linda explain all there is in this 10-minute-long video.

If you don’t, here is the gist… If you have exclusive stories with attachments, you can submit them and get paid 1,000 for every successful entry. According to Aunty Linda, you can make as much as 10,000 every day if you desire – I Don’t suppose it’s that easy though.

If you manage to get up to 50,000 users following your page, you get an ad slot for page which will entitle you to 20% of whatever the ad placer pays – Who’s to know exactly how much though? If you get 100,000 followers, you get 2 ad slots.

So what do we make of LIS?

Is it just blue facebook?

A simple Photoshop trick says YES.

Some think it is “revolutionary”

Wait till they start charging money for verification badges

While this seems like a perfectly great idea, have start-ups gone past the age of starting slowly before incorporating more complex ideas like wallet management, direct social network shopping, etc? You never know. This looks like a lot to manage but if anyone can do it, Linda can… She perhaps still runs her blog under-staffed after all.

Meet the Google Pixel, and you might forget the iPhone.

Google today announced it’s very first smartphone, and It’s called “Pixel”. Wait, what? Yeah you read that right. Unlike previous attempts with the Nexus and Motorola, the pixel is #madebygoogle, and a high-end competitor at that. Not unlike the iPhone and Galaxy s-series.  The Pixel comes in two models: The 5 inch Pixel, and the 5.5 inch Pixel X, and three colors: Quite black, really blue, and very silver.

From products, like the OnHub router and the Chromecast, it’s safe to say googles isn’t shy about hardware anymore. Let’s get to the details.

the Highest rated camera ever

Under the hood, Both phones feature a 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32GB base internal storage, an 8MP front facing camera, and a 12.3 MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture (touted to be he Highest rated camera ever.). What's more, is the unlimited storage for photos and videos to google drive, which comes in handy when shooting 4k videos.

optical image stabilization on the Pixel

The new Pixel phones come with built-in superfast charging capability, Google claims the battery lasts all day, and the device can run for 7 hours under a 15minute charge. The phones aren't as cheap as we hoped. If you've ever owned a nexus, this might come rather surprising as google ditches the affordable prices for the now-common $649 base price.

Perhaps on of the most important features on the phone is google's new assistant, simple called "Google assistant". with it, you can kick off a conversation which feels a lot like talking to Siri or Cortana. the assistant also has the ability to respond to follow-up conversations and dig into your preferences and other services such as Uber.

And hey, there was also a really cool silicon valley intro, for Silicon Valley lovers at the #madebygoogle event. Here you go!

What Are We Supposed To Do With The New Snapchat Glasses? image

What Are We Supposed To Do With The New Snapchat Glasses?

Surely they don’t expect us walking around with these ridiculous spectacles.

Snapchat, the company responsible for the whole of humanity’s recent hunger for filming their every activity, yesterday unveiled its new name Snap Inc. It also unveiled a new piece of hardware; glasses that come with inbuilt cameras that capture videos you can upload immediately via the Snapchat app.

This makes me think, what am I supposed to do with this? Does it even have a preset for me – I’m short sighted and I don’t suppose you just have it in your pocket till you need to film a Snapstory.

According to Wall Street Journal, when you slip Spectacles on and tap a button near the hinge, it records up to 10 seconds of video from your first-person vantage. Each new tap records another clip.

That’s how it works but what happens when you run out of battery?

Well, you simply put in inside its special case to charge again.... when fully charged, it can film an entire day’s worth of events according to Verge

The glasses will cost $130 (that could be anything between 40,000 to 500,000 these days), will come in one size, and be available in three colours: black, teal, and coral.

How do I transfer the video?

Apple iPhone trumps Droids... yet again. “If you have an Android device, you have to transfer them via Wi-Fi. If you have an iOS device, they will transfer by default via the glasses' Bluetooth connection. Or, you can choose to can transfer them at a higher resolution over Wi-Fi”. That’s what Verge said.

The glasses Spiegel refers to as a “toy” is designed to be worn for “kicks” during fun activities that require active participation like an outdoor barbeque or something like that. Spiegel also admits it will take some time getting used to “We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out... It’s about us figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it.”

With Instagram joining in the game, CEO Evan Spiegel is hoping this can re-establish Snapchat’s dominance as the one true annoying video exchange platform.

So back to the original question, what are we supposed to do with this piece of hardware?

Wear it clubbing and get reminded that there’s no sun inside?

Twitter Now Allows You See When Your Direct Message Has Been Read

I’m all for positive change but Twitter Wyd?

Twitter today announced its new Direct Messages feature. It’s probably not what you think – Twitter is bringing Whatsapp-ian features to its “messages” tab making the Social network more IM than it used to be.

Starting from your next upgrade, you will be able to see when your messages have been read and when your recipient is typing... so say goodbye to those “I’m just seeing this” texts.

Along with this, you will be able to preview website links sent or received during your conversations.

We hope so.

While we are all waiting for an “edit tweet” button, twitter is creating more ways to discourage those brave DM plunges.

Apple Introduces The iPhone7 And iPhone 7 Plus image

Apple Introduces The iPhone7 And iPhone 7 Plus

Photo: Apple

Apple took the wraps off its next-generation iPhones at today’s product event, and it turns out all our predictions were right – Well most of them. See here, in case you missed it. Let’s get back to the basics, shall we.

The iPhone 7 and 7 plus are almost exactly what the rumours said they would be. Maybe except for a few additions and uh, subtractions.  Starting at $649 and $769 (we would do the math, but it’s getting pretty unpredictable these days) for the 32gb base model, the iPhone 7 and 7 plus feature quite a number of improvements and new features too.

At first glance, it may not be obvious to the eye, but Apple has redesigned its signature home button. Perhaps a much needed change, the Home button features the same pressure sensitive technology as the ones on the new MacBooks, with taptic feedback too.

IPhone 7camera

Photo: Apple

The cameras come next in line; both models feature a 7-megapixel FaceTime (front facing) camera. Things get pretty interesting at the back, with the 7 spotting a 12MP rear camera, and the 7 plus, two: a wide-angle and a telephoto camera. Both cameras also come with optical image stabilization and a quad-LED True Tone flash bundled in.

AirpodsPhoto: Apple

Apple also launched a set of wireless headphones called the “Airpods” which contain built-in sensors to detect when a pod is in your ear, and play music. Music won’t play otherwise. Apple is also including an adapter for older 3.5mm headphones, just in case you’re still stuck in the past.

The new iPhones come supercharged with a super powerful A10 chip. Apple touts it the most powerful chip ever on a smartphone, delivering 50% more power than the A9 chip. Now that’s fast – on paper at least. Battery life also got signicant boost, thanks to the super efficient A10 chip. Apple says the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have the best battery life of any iPhone.

Mark Zuckerberg Is In Lagos And We Are All Excited

Founder and CEO of the Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg arrived Nigeria earlier today. His first destination was none other than the CoCreation Hub, Yaba, Lagos.

His visit here is to meet with the tech giants in Nigeria and discuss how tech development and entrepreneurship can benefit from his platform.

Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, met with Pope Francis at The Vatican on Monday where they held a question and answer session and talked about his future plans for the world before doing some sightseeing and setting their sights to Lagos unannounced.

“Next stop: Lagos! This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I'll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I'm excited to learn as much as I can.

Our first stop is the Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB) in Yaba. I got to talk to kids at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who come to CcHub to build and launch their apps. I'm looking forward to meeting more people here!”

Apple Is Saying Goodbye To The Home Button In 2017 image

Apple Is Saying Goodbye To The Home Button In 2017

We are standing just a month away from the release of the next iPhone but somehow, it’s the 2017 iPhone the world keeps talking about. We already know a lot about the 2017 iPhone; from the return of the all glass back to the complete redesign and removal of the earphone jack. Just when we think we’ve seen all there is to the new generation of iPhones, Apple shows us another angle.

According to Bloomberg, in 2017, iPhone is saying goodbye to the home button. In celebration of the device’s 10th year anniversary, using OLED display technology, the entire front will appear to be a single sheet of glass.

Nikkei Asian Review reported earlier this week that Apple is likely to introduce a third smartphone option next year with a curved display. In fact, the report states Samsung may even be the supplier for these curved OLED displays.

Apart from the removal of the headphone jack, the iPhone 7 is said to feature 2 rare cameras and a memory boost to 3GB of RAM. According to Verge, it will also contain a pressure-sensitive home button that relies on the same type of vibrating haptic feedback used in the Apple Watch and the trackpad of the new Apple MacBook.

Everything You Need To Know About The iPhone 7 And 7 Plus image

Everything You Need To Know About The iPhone 7 And 7 Plus

In recent months, we’ve learned a lot of circumstantial things about the next iPhone. So much, we think Apple should really consider firing their security team. It seems as though half of the internet today has an iPhone 7 shell, one might speculate Apple allows these leaks to happen on purpose, maybe for extra publicitybut iPhone leaks are everywhere, and here’s what we know so far.

it was long rumored that Apple would be releasing three iPhone models this September: the iPhone7, 7 Plus and 7 pro. We however don’t think this is going to happen. Apple is very likely to stick to the expected two: the 7 and the 7 plus.

This one, we are absolutely certain of, it’s been leaked way too many times.

Both iPhone models will feature a raised camera edge, a larger camera on the iPhone 7 and a dual lens (yes you heard that right) on the iPhone 7 plus. Unlike the horizontal antenna bands found on the previous iPhone models, the antenna bands on the iPhone 7 and 7plus will wrap around the top and button of the phone, giving it a cleaner appearance. The headphone jack will be gone, and a smart connector is rumored to happen on the iPhone 7 plus; they would look just like they do on the iPad pro. This would open up the door to a world of potential features and third party accessories, maybe even wireless charging and what not.

The display resolution isn’t rumored to go up, however Apple may go ahead to increase the color gamut to p3 spec, such as they have on the iMacs and the new iPad Pro.

Both cameras will feature new improvements, but in different ways. The iPhone 7 will feature a larger sensor, optimal image stabilization, and have larger pixels so it will probably do better in low light. However, Apple isn’t likely to increase the mega pixel count. The 7 plus will feature a dual lens camera with many added benefits, such as optical zoom, better low light capability, and better focus. The raised edge on both cameras also appears slightly more noticeable than the one of the iPhone 6s and 6s plus.

Head phone jack

Yes people, the headphone jack is gone, and you’re going to have to deal with it!

For months now, rumours have swirled in about the lack of headphone jack on the iPhone 7. Wired headphones will connect to the iphone using its lighting port, and Bluetooth headphones will connect wirelessly. This means that lightning earpods are well underway, and other proprietary products will follow suit. However, sources confirm there would be a 3.5mm lightning adaptor shipping right out of the box.

The Apple A10 chip will definitely come to the iPhone 7. According to geek bench results, it will be on par with the A9X chip found on the latest iPad. The IPhone 7 chip is going to focus on power and efficiency. This means more battery life and improved speed for you.

The battery will be getting bigger. 14% to be exact, from a 1715mAh model, on the iPhone6 to a 1960mAh model on the iPhone 7.

Apple will be ditching the 16GB in favor of a 32GB base model.

Release date

We might actually know the exact release date for the iPhone 7. To be this exact is a little unusual. We usually don’t know when, but @evleaks on twitter, is claiming to know the exact date. @evleaks is very prominent and reliable veteran, he’s been leaking news like these form many companies for years and years, and he’s saying it’s going to happen on the week of September 12. September 16th to be exact.

Instagram Is Waging War On Snapchat

If you are already pissed off by Snapchatters constantly having their phones extended trying to capture life’s every moment, your life is about to get a whole lot worse. Instagram today announced they are releasing something called “Instagram stories”; that is Snapchat for you if Evan Spiegel isn’t willing to sell yet.

What techcrunch is calling Snapchat for adults, instagram stories are rolling out over the next few weeks.

“Today, we’re introducing Instagram Stories, a new feature that lets you share all the moments of your day, not just the ones you want to keep on your profile. As you share multiple photos and videos, they appear together in a slideshow format: your story.” Much like snapchat, this new story feature isn’t going to hang around for the longest... They apparently leave after 24 hours.”

“You’ll see stories from people you follow in a bar at the top of your feed — from your best friends to your favorite popular accounts. When there’s something new to see, their profile photo will have a colorful ring around it.

What Edtech In Nigeria Should Be All About image

What Edtech In Nigeria Should Be All About

In these past few months, I’ve followed several Edtech solutions/companies closely and while their effort is laudable for having achieved some success, I strongly believe their approach is flawed. This is not to specifically claim that they’re doing the wrong things but simply that they would have greater impact on the Nigerian education system if they refocused their efforts. There is a lot of attention being paid to the lower levels of education – primary and secondary schools – as well as the transitional exams into higher institutions yet the greatest problem lies within the tertiary education system. This is after all, the system supposed to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and its industrial applications in order to be more productive in the outside world.

Of course, it’ll be quite easy to point to the Western world’s focus on computer based courses and conclude, “Presto, that’s what we need” but that would not only be ill-advised but also uninformed. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that some of the top qualifications in the Western world are computer-based skills, hence the spotlight on such. With a much different system at work in Nigeria, it’s not effective to adopt a similar strategy if you want to provide indigenous value on a large scale. We must look into our biggest industries and prevalent practices in order to devise a solution that provides the most impact. Industries such as Agriculture, Real Estate as well as Engineering – Petroleum/Chemical in particular – are excellent starting points in which technology can provide better equipped potential employees that can add value to their employers, improve existing systems and provide nationwide economic growth.

Let us focus on what the market needs from graduates, find experts who can provide this ‘education’ and link them up with those still in the tertiary education system. If this strategy is successfully executed, we’ll have more individuals who upon leaving higher institutions are better suited to fulfil the country’s needs thereby increasing their chances of getting jobs and that needful work experience, as Mr Tayo Oviosu stated. This is crucial in improving your chances of creating a sustainable and successful business in due time. It’s a pretty efficient cycle if you ask me: Educate undergrads with useful and applicable skills, thus making them increasingly employable which in turn leads to an individual with the right work experience and skillset to educate another generation of undergrads.

I may be wrong though or maybe there’s already someone out there who knows this and is working on it but I strongly believe the Edtech companies will not have truly fulfilled their potential until they are able to successfully employ this strategy to transform the Nigerian education system.

12 Free Apps That Make Using An iPhone Totally Worth It image

12 Free Apps That Make Using An iPhone Totally Worth It

Droids are cool, there’s no disputing that but even though using an Apple iPhone can sometimes be pretty demanding, they are just better generally. Although 95% of these apps I’ll be talking about can only be found in the Apple App Store, they are totally worth every megabyte which is okay really ‘cause they are FREE too.

Fresh Air

Fresh Air is a beautiful weather app designed with a minimal approach. It beats the pre-installed weather widget hands down, it graphs your weather in a minute by minute graph based on temperature, feels like, wind, humidity etc. It makes it easier to plan your day and sends notifications and calendar changes for your existing event. It makes weather look so beautiful and you will almost wish it was your lockscreen.

Hyperlapse from Instagram is a much needed app for travellers. What this app does is that it creates a time lapse video from already taken videos or series of photos so let’s say you were hiking and you take 5 photos every 5 minutes for 3 hours, it combines these images and creates a beautiful timelapse spanning just about 5 seconds and it magically erases every rough or blurry photo.

Litely is a photography app that polishes your images to get a subtle more refined photo finish. Already comes with over 66 presets you can install so you can get that gorgeous film-inspired look.

Photoshop Fix

The most deceptive app ever to be developed gets its most deceptive feature of all time straight to your mobile app. The power of image retouching is now in your hands. It also allows you sign into your Adobe Creative Cloud and get images from your desktop and export them there also.

Paper is iOS’ ultimate sketchpad. It is the best way to create a list, capture and connect notes, check details in photos and sketch diagrams with uneatable ease.

Afterpulse is the next generation of mobile gaming, it is a beautiful shooting game very similar to the Call Of Duty we all play in terms of gameplay and all round strategy, and it is specifically built for Apple users.

Bumble is a match finding app much like tinder that I was sceptical to get considering my ordeals with tinder. Upon installation and first use, I figured there was just one major difference between the two apps; with bumble, the female HAS to be the one to initiate the chats which is great lol. So finally, we’re saying goodbye to those pointless “sup babe” conversations.

Fear The Walking Dead: Dead Run

Fear the walking dead puts you inside the zombie apocalyptic fall in L.A. from the AMC show. Relentlessly pursued by the zombies, you have to navigate a way out for yourself while shooting (which slows you down), it’s a very strategic and exhilarating game.

If you’re like me and you have no idea how your money goes, download this app. This app allows you manage your finance in a beautiful way using cool infographics. Track your income and find out where your money goes every month, set a monthly limit and set personal preference lists based on what you need the most.

Todo Movies 4

Todo Movies is the best way to find movies you want to see, avoid the ones you have seen before, create a custom list, and discover new movies. It contains posters and other unique contents like cast profile, release notifications, bonus scene indicators etc.

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock

If you run a tight schedule daily, you need to get this app, not only does it correct sleeping patterns, it helps you sleep good as you can choose between deep to light sleeps at any time. It finds the optimal time to wake you up, notifies you when you have a sleep debt to pay up, and monitors your phone’s accelerometer to detect which sleep mode you are without you knowing.

This live photo filter video app lets you swap faces to anything on your phone. You can choose from over a hundred faces and meme worthy face swaps.

Maximising Windows 10 By Unlocking Secret Settings image

Maximising Windows 10 By Unlocking Secret Settings

Everyone has an opinion about Windows. The new Windows 10 registry is chucked full and sprawling with usually impenetrable settings file covering just about every aspect of the operating system and applications running on a computer. A lot of these settings are hidden from the user, but if you know what you’re doing, you can don your tweaking and customize Windows in a variety of ways. Here’s how to get started.
To edit the registry, type “regedit” into the search box in the taskbar and launch the application listed. It’s important to note that you carry out these edits at your own risk. While you shouldn’t run into problems with the tweaks listed below, playing around with the registry has the potential to cause Windows some serious problems.

The Regedit utility is pretty simple to use. Double-click on folders to open them or values to change them, and right-click to create new keys and values when required. It’s a good idea to make a backup of the registry before you start attempting any of these tweaks, which you can do by selecting File and then Export from the Regedit menus.

1) Enable the dark theme

There’s a hidden dark theme in Windows 10. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Themes, create a Personalized key, then create a new DWORD value inside it called AppsUseLightTheme and leave the value as 0.

Repeat the process for HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Themes and when you restart your machine the new theme appears. Delete the two AppsUseLightTheme DWORD values to go back to the light theme.

2) Speed up startup times
Windows puts a delay on any apps that boot with Windows to get you up and running with the actual OS more quickly, but you can disable this if you want. If you don’t have many apps starting with Windows then, it can shave off some seconds during the boot up process.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ Serialize (create the Serialize key if it doesn’t exist), create a new DWORD value called StartupDelayInMSec and set it to 0. Delete the Serialize key if you want to revert back.

3) Increase the taskbar transparency

You can make the taskbar (and Start menu and Action Center) transparent through the Personalization section of Settings, but if you want more transparency than this option gives you, there’s a registry tweak to show even more of the desktop background.

The registry key you want is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ Advanced. Create a UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency DWORD value inside it, and set it to 1. Delete the same DWORD value to undo the changes.

4) Disable the login image
When you reach the login screen in Windows 10, you’ll see the default hero image created by Microsoft, but you can disable this if you want to. Head to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Policies\ Microsoft\ Windows\ System and create a new DWORD value.

Call the value DisableLogonBackgroundImage and set its value to 1. The same solid color you’ve set for the accents elsewhere in Windows will be set on the login screen too, but How-To Geek has an excellent guide to changing this color or adding a different image.

5) Hide OneDrive from File Explorer

If you don’t make much use of OneDrive then you can hide its entry in the navigation pane with a registry tweak. The registry key you need to open is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6} (note Regedit does have a Find function).

Locate the System.IsPinnedToNameSpaceTree, double-click on it, and set the value to 0. This hides the OneDrive icon from the navigation pane but it’s still there on your system—go to C:\ Users\ <username>\ OneDrive if you need to find it again.

Happy exploring.

Twitter Gives In To Self-Absorption And Now Lets You Retweet Yourself image

Twitter Gives In To Self-Absorption And Now Lets You Retweet Yourself

The new twitter update drops the dot-@, usernames and attachments from the 140-character limit, and now finally lets you retweet your own tweets but you can already tell which new feature is getting all the attention.

Ever felt like your tweet didn’t bang as much as you intended, don’t worry, with this new twitter, you can always increase your blast radius after dropping those bomb tweets.

Before you shove this aside as yet another narcissistic and self glorifying tweak by another social network, you should know that this is an incredible power to have if you own a small business you are trying to promote. You no longer have to rely on friends to amplify your tweets when you can do so regularly yourself.

While some twitter users wait for the elusive "edit" button, others are running wild with this new feature, some think it's a pretty useless feature likened to cyber masturbation.

On security, the company has taken the block button more seriously with blocked users not being able to see tweets from their blockers even if they are quoted or retweeted, a feature you probably would get to experience if you retweet your tweets one too many times.

iOS 10 Is Here And Its Worthy Of The Milestone Figure

The new apple iOS 10 is available in its beta stage today but what does it mean for its users?

The update was announced during the company’s WWDC 2016 keynote. The update contains some impressive improvement especially in the iMessage division for both mobile and tablet users alike.

If you’re in a rush, here’s a 2 minute video of what the upgrade contains courtesy Techradar.

Of all the changes made, the one people seem to relate well to is the fact that with the new OS, you can delete any app, yes, even those in-built apps you never actually use.

If you have iOS 10 beta, you can remove these apps from your Home screen:

Calculator, Calendar, Compass, FaceTime, Find My Friends , Home, iBooks , iCloud Drive, iTunes Store, Mail, Maps, News, Notes, Podcasts

Even those really annoying ones.

Other new features include the new lockscreen that comes simpler and better than any of the previous version. It features a raise to wake tech which unlocks your mobile device when you hit the fast TouchID home button.

Better lockscreen notification which breaks down notifications into bubbles and uses 3D touch to show hidden menu options much like what the latest generation of Apple users enjoy.

Clear all notification button is now available. If you have ever had to delete all your notifications on the previous OS, you’d know what a horrible waste of precious time this exercise is. Just hard press over the little "x" icon within the redesigned (and now dedicated) notifications pulldown menu and tap the "clear all" box that pops up.

Sleek new Control Center that looks a lot better than the previous iOS, the iOS 10 control center fixes the clustered mess that Apple made before now, segmenting each feature appropriately, from the Airdrop to the now playing and the night shift.

Even looks better with music.

A new lockscreen widget now lets you see how your day goes. All since older versions of Apple’s OS, swiping up from the bottom right of your lockscreen automatically takes you to the camera but here’s the new thing, swiping up from the bottom left shows you Apple’s “Today widget” which lets you see your fitness, health and sports update once activated. It’s not as customisable as Androids but it’s a step in the right direction.

Better Siri: Two billion requests a week go through Siri, and it's now going to do so much more, according to Apple. With that, they announced that iOS 10 will open up Siri to third-party developers.

Very soon, Siri would be able to say things like “Remind Bukky on Whatsapp to bring the stew out of the fridge” and just in the same manner, Siri would be able to take commands along the same line.

Also, Siri would be saying a lot less “Sorry, i can’t...” this is all thanks to Apple’s new intense API which functions just as well in other languages.

iMessage improvements

The all new iMessage comes with a lot of inprovements, imagine typing a sentence and then having the emoji replaceable words highlighted because according to Apple, Emojis make texting better.

That’s just one, emojis can be sent 3x bigger, and now we have emotion texts which lets you send texts which now appear in bubbles. They pop up depending on the mood you’re trying to text in, really slow for a more sad text and faster for a loud shout but it all depends on you, you control the motion.

You can also use "invisible ink" that requires the message receiver to slide their finger over a text or photo. It'll be either a nice surprise, or horrific shock from friends. You decide

You can now send handwritten texts via iMessage also, pretty cool... even allowable are hand drawn smileys.

Although, it’s in its beta stage and Apple is testing, one thing is sure, it’s going to come with a lot of bugs but it’s going to be worth it.

Instagram’s New Algorithm Is Finally Here, And Yes It Ruins Your Feed image

Instagram’s New Algorithm Is Finally Here, And Yes It Ruins Your Feed

Okay so remember when your Instagram timeline went nuts somewhere around this year’s Easter season: with posts like “Instagram is about to change its algorithm, change your profile setting to continue viewing feeds from me…. Blah blah blah.”  Yup we hated that too.

Earlier this year, Instagram began testing a new feed sorted by an algorithm, and announced it was going to change the order in which feeds appeared in users’ timeline showing images and videos  ” best suited” for users. In other words, no more chronological feeds.

In a lot of ways, the switch makes sense.  Instagram continues to top the image sharing platforms, and with its user base growing daily, it becomes harder to keep up with your followers and their posts. With over 400 million monthly users posting more and more photos and videos daily, the company explains that on an average, 70 percent of feeds are missed by users, and it's goal is to crunch those numbers.

Instagram says there is no way users can disable it. At least for now. That’s such a bummer for users who like getting a timeline view in their feed - like me.  However, you can still get a chronological view of a user’s account when you tap on their name.

According to Instagram, this new algorithm ensures you never miss a post from your best friend or favourite celebrity, no matter how many accounts you follow. A more personalized feed based on what Instagram thinks you will enjoy is created for you. The new feed algorithm will presumably work like Facebook’s . the more attention a post gets, the more likely it is you see it. This means some posts will “vanish” almost immediately – sorry!

Instagram will roll out the changes to the feed over the next month

Whatsapp Video Calls Will Soon Be A Thing image

Whatsapp Video Calls Will Soon Be A Thing

Whatsapp, the largest IM community has wrestled its way from viber to BBM and now wants to take on Video calling challenge similar to iMessage’s Facetime. There have been reports which suggest that Whatsapp could in fact launch a Video call feature later this year in one of its updates. The date has not been confirmed as this feature is just in its Beta testing phase but the idea of video calling without having to go through the stress of creating a Skype profile is refreshing.

From leaked images circulating on the internet, the way this feature would work would be simple, a simple click on the call feature which already exists initiates a pop up which prompts you to select which type of call you would be using; video or audio.

With more than a billion active monthly users, the addition or supposed addition of this feature doesn’t surprise anyone. If you can get all your social communication done on one platform then why use two?

Whatsapp having introduced Whatsapp Web, enabled user-share documents and end-to-end encryption are not looking to slow down on their upgrades this year with this new feature going to be enabled on both iOS and Android platforms.

This upgrade is available in the latest beta version of the app which can be downloaded in apk mirror website but with a lot of complains as to why the calls don’t connect to several destinations, we probably wouldn’t be seeing this feature anytime soon.

How To Solve Your iPhone Storage Dilemma image

How To Solve Your iPhone Storage Dilemma

If you use a 16gb iPhone then you’re probably familiar with this popup. Annoying as it gets, there’s really nothing you can do about it; you love those beautiful selfies and God knows you’re not taking down TLOP for some stupid extra megabytes. You’ve probably sworn countless times to get a larger capacity iPhone but when the time comes, they’re just too pricey.

Thankfully, an editor at Reddit found out a hack that frees up as much as 2/3gb on your Apple device without you having to delete any App, song or photo. Isn’t that something?

First, check how much space you have left on your device. You can do this by clicking "Settings" --> "General" --> "Storage & iCloud Usage".

Here’s where the trick starts.

Go to the movies section of the iTunes store , if you can't find this section just at the bottom of your screen, you will have to change your store location to the United States'. After that, pick a big file to rent – one that's bigger than the amount of space you have left on your phone. Don't worry, you won't have to pay for it (so long as the file is actually big enough).

Click on "Rent" and you will get a notification telling you there isn't enough space on your device to download the film. You'll get a choice to then press "OK" or "Settings".

Click on "Settings" to view your available storage again, and lo and behold, you'll see it's increased.

That's because your iPhone has automatically cleared superfluous junk like cookies, histories and other data from your apps in an attempt to make space for the film. Think of it like a spring clean for your phone.

We tried the trick on an iPhone 6 with Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (a 6GB file), and watched the available storage increase from 130MB to 830MB the first time around. After a second sweep the capacity was beefed up again to 1.5GB.

Waiting for a bit longer before hitting "Settings" on the prompt also appears to result in a more thorough clean.

You can do this multiple times to free up more space... So there you have it, you don’t need to delete those jams after all.

Ericsson Shows Us What 5G Would Feel Like image

Ericsson Shows Us What 5G Would Feel Like

We’ve seen GPRS become EDGE, we’ve seen EDGE become 3G, we’ve seen 4G and 4G LTE but is the world ready for 5G?

Ericsson-LG showed the world what 5G could be like in Korea last Thursday. It was the first time the network equipment manufacturers showcased their network in Korea and boy did they showcase their network. The 5G network equipment used for the demonstration offered a peak download speed of 26 gigabit per second, around 350 times faster than the current Long-Term Evolution network.

Patrick Johansson, the chief executive of Ericsson-LG, talks about the 5G network at the firm’s headquarters in Anyang City, Gyeonggi Province. (Ericsson-LG)

“I feel proud of the Ericsson-LG researchers at the Anyang R&D center who are contributing to achieving technical innovation for both Korean and global customers,” said Patrick Johansson, the chief executive of Ericsson-LG in Anyang City where the demonstration was held.

He also added that the company would work together with Korean telecom firms for further promoting the 5G network.

“Ericsson, which marks the 140th anniversary of its foundation this year and introduced the first magneto telephone switch and a telephone in 1896 in Korea, has been playing a leading role in the Korean telecom market,” said the CEO.

Hello iPhone 4: Apple Is Returning To An All-Glass Back In 2017 image

Hello iPhone 4: Apple Is Returning To An All-Glass Back In 2017

This year’s iPhone will most likely not be called iPhone 7.

That is because the 10th year anniversary of the original iPhone is this year thus making apple push their huge rumoured redesign to 2017. In a new report by KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo, the reliable Apple analyst claims that the iPhone will be seeing a major redesign in 2017, dropping the iconic aluminum casing for an all-glass enclosure with AMOLED screen.

Kuo believes that Apple will be moving to an all-glass enclosure, dropping aluminum completely as it will no longer appear modern or fresh in 2017. Apple’s smartphone competitors are also adopting aluminum designs in droves, making it more likely Apple will want to differentiate with entirely new materials.

Kuo does not elaborate on how Apple will make the next iPhone entirely out of glass, so currently the specifics of the drastic redesign will have to be left to the imagination. Apple used glass for the iPhone 4/4s front and back, but this was sandwiched together with a stainless steel band. It’s currently unclear how an iPhone could be constructed primarily out of glass.

The new glass phone will also feature a new AMOLED display panel, which will be thinner and lighter to compensate for the slight weight increase of glass compared with metal exteriors. Kuo does not believe that drop test issues will be a roadblock in Apple’s decision making, given the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s already relied heavily on glass front and back. Last week, Apple reportedly reached a $2.6 billion agreement with Samsung to supply OLED panels for iPhone displays.

Apparently, Closing Apps To Save Your Battery Only Makes Things Worse image

Apparently, Closing Apps To Save Your Battery Only Makes Things Worse

For many smartphone users, closing apps has become a subconscious action even while your battery is on a 100%. You double-tap your home button on your iPhone or click the multitasking key on your android and remove the apps you aren’t making use of but what we don’t know is that this single line of action could be doing us more harm than good.

In the last week or so, both Apple and Google have confirmed that closing your apps does absolutely nothing to improve your battery life. In fact, says Hiroshi Lockheimer, the VP of Engineering for Android, it might make things worse.

Stop closing your apps to save battery lie. There’s really nothing more to it, if you’re a tech noob, maybe i need to share to you David Pierce’s explanation of how multitasking works.

On iOS, for instance, there are five different states an app can be in at any given time. (Android’s setup is similar enough that we don’t need to go over both.) Not running is obvious: You haven’t launched it, it’s not running. Active is up on the screen and doing stuff. Inactive is a transitional phase, where it’s on the screen but not doing anything as you switch to something else. Background is when the app isn’t in front of your face but is working, refreshing your emails or bringing in the latest fire tweets. Last, there’s Suspended, which is when an app is in the background and doing absolutely nothing. It just sits in memory like a bump on a log.

On both Android and iOS, algorithms run memory management. They’ll close apps that need to be closed, typically ones that have been dormant for a while or are using more power or memory than they should. And they’re very good at knowing when you’re going to need data, or want a refresh, or open an app again. Apps that are already in memory open quickly, rather than having to fully start again; it’s like waking your computer from sleep rather than rebooting it completely. You’re far, far better off letting the system work for you rather than forcing it to re-open and re-start everything every time. Battery questions aside, it makes your phone slower and less coherent.

If you’re hell bent on saving your battery, there’s a lot of things you can do which ranges from turning down your brightness to enable low power mode on your iPhone or doze on your droid. Turn off location sharing for apps that don’t need it (which is a good idea regardless). Put the whole thing in Airplane Mode, if you’re feeling really crazy. But stop swiping your apps out of view, because it’s not helping. If anything, it’s making it worse.

The New Android Emojis Are Going To Be A Little Less Ridiculous image

The New Android Emojis Are Going To Be A Little Less Ridiculous

The difference between Android and iOS emojis has been a cause for concern over recent years. So much so it makes communication difficult at times particularly on the android side which most people believe have it worse in the emoji wars... But all that is set to change.

Google has announced a series of updates as part of its latest Android N preview, but we can skip past the new 3D rendering API and launcher shortcuts and head straight to the real news, which is that Android will finally deploy emoji that look like actual people. Did i hear you say yay?

If you own an iPhone, you might look at me mad thinking “what else do emojis look like?” well, while you see a bald, yellow, blob-like figure on your phone,  your Android friend sees a rather unappealing figure: It’s like a parade of minimalist Minions to be clear.

Henceforth, Android emoji will ditch the melting yellow Buddhas in favour of emoji that look like actual humans. Imagine! It will also allow for skin tone variations just like the iOS.

For what it’s worth, right now this only applies to Android N, which means Android smartphone owners won’t actually see it for some time still, even if they have a Nexus device. If they have something slower to receive updates—which is basically anything else—it could be years.

How The New Spectranet Prices Rank Amongst Other Popular ISP’s image

How The New Spectranet Prices Rank Amongst Other Popular ISP’s

On the 15th of March, Spectranet made effective their new data prices and although it had been in the news a long time ago, a lot of Spectranet subscribers didn’t take it with kindness. The new data plans cost almost two times their previous prices but what you probably don’t know is that Spectranet is still without any doubt the cheapest internet service provider for heavy downloaders and residential users.

If you are a heavy downloader, you wouldn’t be thinking of going back to the basic cellular data MTN or Airtel can provide you. With download speed of up to 4mb/s on peak hours, Spectranet is still your best bet. How about the price? Here is what you do not know, even with the increase; Spectranet is still more affordable than Swift and Smile.

Here’s the trick with smile, their Mifi, or SMifi as they call it is actually the cheapest there in town. It goes for 5,500 and comes with free internet for one month but what happens when that one month is done, LOL. That’s easy, you basically have to pay for all that free internet with you subsequent tariff.

Smile unlimited – 19,800

5GB – 5,500

3GB – 4,000

1GB – 1,500

Night plans.

20GB – 14,000

10GB – 7,500

Suddenly, Spectranet doesn’t feel that bad.

Among these three ISPs, Swift has been around the longest and is your best alternative if you’re planning to leave Spectranet after the price hike.

Swift budget – 300MB for 500

Swift budget plus – 1GB for 2,000

Swift economy – 3GB for 4,000

Swift essential – 14GB for 7,000

Swift club – 20GB for 10,000

Night plans.

5pm to 9am – 34GB for 8,000

You can tell from the plans and prices listed that although the prices have been jacked up by a little too much, it still stays cheapest amongst the top ISPs around now.

Blackberry Users Say Goodbye To Facebook And WhatsApp image

Blackberry Users Say Goodbye To Facebook And WhatsApp

These two social apps will no longer be available to Blackberry, Nokia and Windows mobile users by the end of 2016.

Whatsapp was the first to make this announcement as she celebrated her seventh year of operation. Whatsapp, bought for $16 Billion by Facebook in 2014 was launched in 2009 and then recorded 70% of its users used Blackberry mobile and Nokia phones but according to Whatsapp blog, these times have been long gone.

“Mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft – which account for 99.5 percent of sales today – were on less than 25 percent of mobile devices sold at the time.

“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms: Blackberry (including Blackberry 10), Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2, Windows Phone 7.1.”

“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”

“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.”

Blackberry expressed their disappointment in Facebook’s decision and said “We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands.”

“Despite this, we have worked hard to ensure our end users have the best experience in light of this decision, and are continuing to search for alternate solutions.”

The company encouraged users to let Facebook know how they feel on the social media.
