Overcoming Shyness image

Overcoming Shyness

Do you ever leave a situation thinking you could have said more than you did? Do you remember that fine guy/babe that you made eye contact with and you really wanted to talk to but you didn’t and the moment passed? Do you also remember that time you were in class during a lecture and you had something you could share with the class but you didn’t because you felt sick in your stomach (fine, it’s probably something you ate)? Now, do you remember when you wanted to approach someone for social/business reasons to ask for the time but you were too hesitant to actually do it?

Everybody is shy to a certain degree; it’s not something that happens to a select group of people. So, why are we shy? Shyness can be as a result of different things for different people, some of them are listed below

  • Having a low self-esteem- You think of yourself in a negative way, the voice in your head keeps telling you that you are not good enough. You try to fit in; you try to be like other people who are already their selves so you end up not being anybody.
  • Excessive Self-consciousness- You’re too preoccupied about how you come off and what people think of you most especially in social situations. You start thinking everybody is watching you and you question everything you’re doing.
  • Labelling- You have been labelled as shy by other people right from when you were a kid, so much that even when you grow up and you’ve grown out of it they still expect you to be a shy kid and you feel you have to live up to that label.

How do you overcome shyness?

I feel I have to say here firstly that ‘There’s nothing wrong with being shy but there is also nothing wrong with being outgoing either’, now let’s get into it

  • Acceptance: Accept it for a fact that you’re shy, if you keep resisting it there’s no way for you to work on it. Tell people that you are shy and you will be amazed at how willing they are to help you. Going on a stage and saying you’re shy is actually a great way to relieve you of the tension.
  • List the situations that make you feel shy: Are you shy around your family? Are you shy around strangers? Authority? Opposite sex? Classmates? You need to know which situations trigger your shyness. Are you confident singing in a bar filled with strangers but you can’t speak up in class?
  • Conquer the above list: You don’t have to rush through it, are you shy around strangers, smile and say hi to a stranger on your way out and on your way back. They’re strangers; chances are that you won’t see them again.
  • Stop the comparisons: You might probably never be as expressive as the other guy that works the room, the guy who enters a room and becomes the alpha and that’s fine, you don’t have to be him and comparing yourself with him won’t help you.
  • Focus your attention on others: Instead of being self-conscious all the time, focus your attention on other people, what they’re saying and how they behave. When you stop being so self-conscious, you won’t be bothered about how you come off to people.
  • Practice speaking clearly to yourself: There’s nothing wrong with practicing the speech you’re about to give in front of the mirror or in the car with yourself before you get down. You can even record it and see how you sound to know where you have to improve or the part you think you need to raise your voice. This will save you from the potential embarrassment of mumbling or having to repeat yourself. Speak from your stomach, enunciate your words so that they can come out clearly.
  • Have a good posture: Raise up your chin, sit with a straight back and look at people in the eye when you talk to them, this gives you an air of confidence.
  • Visualize the result: Imagine you standing in front of those classmates and giving that speech that ends up in a standing ovation. Imagine talking to that crush of yours and asking them on a date and they say yes. Visualize yourself being confident, that way when you have to do it you would be prepared.
  •  Find and know your strengths: Just because you can’t sing or dance doesn’t mean you can’t be the life of the party. What about that beat you can make with your mouth that no one knows about because you’re too shy or are you a great listener and you can tell when someone just wants to let off some steam, know your value in every situation.
  • Remember you are awesome: Instead of thinking that you didn’t dress well or that your tie didn’t match why not think of how awesome you are. You know something these people don’t know or you have something they don’t, so why don’t you share that awesomeness with them.
  • Remember to breathe: When you start feeling anxious, take slow deep breaths, count to ten even, and just breathe till you feel comfortable again. Depending on the environment you could also use a bit of movement, take a walk to the restroom or just move round the room, it helps to shift your state of mind and see things from different perspective.
  • Positive affirmation: Words are very important tools, if you tell yourself that you’re shy and cannot talk to that person whose assistance you need, you probably won’t. Tell yourself positive things repeatedly and watch your subconscious believe it and project it. Telling yourself things like, “I’m wonderful, I’m confident” will go a long way.
  • Be informed: Are you attending a conference or a workshop or a party? You need to be informed of the latest events. Are all the game of thrones characters dead? Is the economy in recession? Is Rihanna still dating Wizkid? Is Messi now BFF with Ronaldo? You need to stay abreast of current events so you won’t be left out of the conversations and end up looking lost and sulking in a corner. You’re not going there to show your knowledge off, you just need to keep it simple and chip into the conversation intermittently.
  • Start a conversation: Remember that story your friends think is funny? That new show on TV? That time you separated two fighting dogs? If you could do that, starting a conversation about it can’t be that hard. When you’re having a conversation, add little details to basic statements especially when you’re answering questions. Instead of answering “yes” to “Do you drink?” say something like “Yeah but only on Sundays”, it keeps the conversation going.
  • Look approachable: Don’t go for events looking like your cat has died or looking like you’re angry with the world or be buried in your phone for the whole event, I know you have 1000 twitter followers whose lives depend on your tweets but leaving them for 2 hours won’t hurt them. You know those people you see at events and you want to talk to? How do they look and act? How about those you won’t want to approach? Which group do you belong to? Smile and make eye contact.
  • Practice being in an uncomfortable situation: You need to get up in class and make that speech. You need to tell that girl to go a date with you. Tell that guy in account department you like his dimple. Introduce yourself to a new person each day, talk to people you won’t normally be having a conversation with, keep doing this and you’ll realise that it gets easier with time.
  • Accept rejection: What if your crush turns you down? That man didn’t want to talk to you? What if you make a mistake in front of your classmates? Fine, they’ll laugh at you. Remember you’re not alone and that we have all faced rejections, it is part of the learning process. What matters is how you handle it, don’t take it personally, it probably wasn’t your fault. What did you learn from the situation? Did you really lose anything if you learnt from the situation? You have to move on also, no need for the self-pity, get out there and try again and keep trying.
  • Record your successes: When you start being able to start conversations with strangers, you’ll be able to see yourself in a different light. You will be more confident in situations you used to be shy. When you get these wins put them down in writing so you can go back to them whenever you’re feeling down.
  • Fake it till you make it: This is very important, act like you’re outspoken, act like you’re confident and if you keep at it, you’ll be surprised to see yourself be more confident. You know that confident friend you have? Or that popular TV host? Imagine you were in their shoes, how would they act? Now, act like that till you become that person.

Improve The Quality Of Your Sleep With These 10 Simple Tips image

Improve The Quality Of Your Sleep With These 10 Simple Tips

In a perfect world, we’d all get the sleep we know we need in order to help our bodies and minds function at optimum levels. The reality though, paints a picture of a whole different story. With life’s stresses, tight work deadlines, and the ever-present smartphone found in most bedrooms these days, it can seem impossible to get a good night’s sleep.

Instead of focusing on a wake-up call set an alarm to go to sleep

Most of us wish we could just get to bed a little earlier, and the truth is, most of us need a solid reminder to get us to hit the hay. Star making a habit out of setting an alarm to go to sleep, and then make sure that you follow the prompt, and ease into a gentle bedtime routine when the clock sounds.

Try bed socks. Seriously!

newhealthadvisor

We know that the pair of fluffy bed socks that your mom gave you last Christmas doesn’t look particularly sexy, but wearing them can really help improve the quality of your sleep. This post shows just how beneficial it can be to keep your feet and hands warm when going to bed; it’ll help you fall asleep faster.

Dim things down.

You’ve probably heard this before, but artificial light in your bedroom can disrupt your sleep cycle. Something as simple as an alarm clock can negatively impact your sleep quality, so make sure you ban artificial light from the bedroom. If it’s totally impossible to achieve, consider wearing a pair of eye-masks to bed.

Prioritize the exercise idea

According to a study done in 2013 by the National Sleep Foundation, people that work out on a regular basis tend to get the best shut eye at night. All you need is a few minutes of aerobic exercise to help boost the quality of your shut-eye sessions.

Downsize your dinner servings

Our bodies just don’t do as well as we think they might with digesting food when it’s time for bed. Eating a big, hearty dinner meal can have a bad effect on the quality of your sleep, so try to make dinner your smallest meal of the day.

Make sure your bedroom is sound-approved

While noises like ticking watches can keep you out of lalaland, keeping things too quiet in the bedroom can also keep you up at night. You can always try using a white noise machine in your room to ensure that the sound quality is perfectly adjusted for quality sleep.

Set out special time to process your day

We all know what it feels like to lay in bed, stressing over things that happened during the day, or planning what we’re supposed to get up to the next day. It’s critical that you set aside some special time to process what happened during your day BEFORE you head off to bed. This can include making a list of what needs to be done in the morning, and just decluttering your mind of all the thoughts that have been whirling around up there throughout the day.

Get your Ohm on

active

Whether you’re into yoga, prayer, or a quick meditation session before bed, these tactics can help you wind down and prepare your body for a good night’s sleep. Participating in these relaxing activities may be able to slow down your breathing and calm your heart rate, which assists the body in falling asleep faster.

Wind down in a warm bath

By warm, we’re not implying that you should soak in a bathtub that feels like you’re in boiling water. When you soak in a warm bath for a few minutes, the water temperature increases your body heat. After you get out of the tub, your body will be instantly cooled, which replicates the natural process that your body goes through as it prepares for snooze time. A warm bath before bed doesn’t seem like just an old wives tale anymore!

Invest in a good pillow

miuwallet

Dust mites, those nasty critters that accumulate on your sheets and pillows, have a tendency to cause allergic reactions in some people, which may seriously disrupt your sleep. You’ll end up having sounder sleep cycles, with brighter mornings if you stick to replacing your pillow every 12 to 18 months.

3 Natural Ways to Whiten Your Teeth image

3 Natural Ways to Whiten Your Teeth

Most of us strive to always showcase a pearly-white smile to the world, but sadly, the cost of achieving that in the dentist’s chair can easily blow your budget to kingdom come.

The good news is that there are a lot of cheaper and gentler approaches that you can use to achieve a whiter set of teeth. In this post we’ll be showing you how to easily whiten your teeth at home, using products that might already be lurking in your kitchen cupboards!

draxe

Number One - Brush With Baking Soda

Baking Soda (bicarbonate of soda) is a stock pantry item, but have you ever considered using it for more than just a meal prep ingredient? Baking soda can clean your teeth, sure, but it also has the ability to tackle stains that have built up on the teeth due to caffeine and smoking. The reason why baking soda can help clean up surface stains from the teeth is because it’s abrasive. Because baking soda’s crystals dissolve in water, it can penetrate deep into crevices that most other abrasives cannot reach.

Heads Up: Since baking soda is a powerful abrasive, it should only be used once or twice a month until you have the results you were aiming for. You can also mix it with Activated Charcoal for an even more effective teeth whitener.

How to Use: Simply mix a teaspoon of baking soda with enough water to form a smooth paste. Apply the paste to a toothbrush and then proceed to brush your teeth for about two minutes before rinsing and brushing a second time with regular toothpaste.

Number Two - Delight in Dairy Products

You might have thought of “drinking milk for strong teeth” as nothing more than an old wives tale. Sure, adults don’t actually absorb calcium from milk in order to promote the good health of their teeth, but dairy products may actually help whiten up your teeth. Dairy products are crammed full of lactic acid, and it has been found that this substance has the ability to restore teeth strength and might also be able to prevent tooth decay. Since the lactic acid strengthens the enamel on your teeth, it can actually help preserve the white glow of your teeth.

Number Three - Try Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is recorded as an ancient Ayurvedic tooth-whitening method because it has been used to promote oral health and general dental hygiene over the ages. This method of whitening hasn’t been confirmed by clinical studies, but given its long history, you really have nothing to lose.

All you need to do to try this method is to swish a teaspoon of oil (choose between coconut oil and sesame oil) around in your mouth for about a minute each morning. Coconut oil has been reported to be the most effective when it comes to whitening power (since it contains lauric acid), but oil pulling, in general, can help rid your teeth of plaque and other grime, which makes teeth appear yellow.

While you can use those three methods to help brighten up the appearance of your teeth, you need to keep in mind that these are not instant fixes, and that they’ll take some time to show a remarkable difference. While you’re working towards achieving the results you’d like to see, there are a few things that you can start doing to ensure that your teeth don’t yellow any further.

How to Prevent Teeth from Turning Yellow

Chew Some Gum

We’re talking about sugar-free chewing gum here, not the sweet bubblegum that kids adore. By chewing gum on a regular basis, you can help reduce the amount of bacteria and acid inside of your mouth, which promotes better oral hygiene. The other way that chewing gum helps is by producing more saliva (or rather stimulating the production thereof). Saliva contains special enzymes that can help protect your teeth, and may also help prevent a yellow appearance.

Up Your Fruit & Veggie Intake

Fruits and vegetables aren’t only essential to a balanced immune system; they can actually help promote the good health of your teeth! Natural abrasives include crunchy foods like apples, carrots, and celery. These foods help to gently clean your teeth, and since they’re high in cellulose, they may aid in removing surface stains on the teeth, and prevent tooth decay.

And Don’t Forget The Strawberries!

Strawberries fall into a “superfood” category, and with good reason. Not only are they crammed full of good-for-you vitamins and minerals, they may actually restore the natural whiteness of your teeth and help prevent further yellowing. Since they contain malic acid, strawberries might be able to remove surface stains on the teeth and also help protect the teeth from plaque buildup.

What Has Feminism Ever done For You? image

What Has Feminism Ever done For You?

No, really what has it done for you? Has it made you angry? Has it made you bitter? Did it disgust you? If it has ever stirred up any sort of emotion in you, I’m glad, because it means it is working.

Personally, when I learned about feminism, it made me angry, angry at the situation, angry at the society, and most of all angry at myself, I was hit with a self-realization so big, I was in denial for a while. I was a decent guy, how could it be that I was part of the problem? How could something so obvious be staring me in the face and I didn’t know it?

Feminism isn’t about women who hate men, but you knew that already. Feminism isn’t about bitter women who can’t get a husband, but you also knew this already. You know feminism isn’t about all these things but you would rather make it seem that way because you are probably weak and can’t face up to what feminism is really about.

Feminism;

  •  The advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.
  • The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities
  • The term feminism can be used to describe a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women.

If there was any positive I got out of all this, it is to say that I have learned, and I have also ‘unlearned’, down to the most basic things, I now know I can’t go around saying things that may seem little like ‘It’s because she is a woman’ or tell a guy ‘Why are you acting like a woman?’

I think one subtle thing feminism has managed to do without even trying, is to teach us how to raise our sons, because maybe if we raised our sons right there might actually be no need for feminism. The same way there wouldn’t be an anti-racism campaign if there was no racism. Wouldn’t the world be a better place?

I don’t act like I speak for women, I can’t, I didn’t even really know about feminism till like 3 years ago, I don’t have a first-hand experience of what women face daily but I can talk about it, I can educate people on feminism, I can demand for a change in how women are treated starting from the people closest to me. I can and would help in any way I think I can.

So, when someone asks you what feminism has done for you, you don’t have to reply them anyway tell them it hasn’t done something for you, tell them it’s doing a lot of things for you, and with a smile you can tell them it has taught you common sense, because

It is common sense that you cannot sum of the totality of someone’s life as a place in the kitchen

It is common sense that you cannot tell someone all they can aspire to be is married

It is common sense that you cannot expect praises for changing your child’s diaper

It is common sense that you cannot expect someone to always cook for you even days when she comes back from work knackered

It is common sense that people should be paid equally for skills acquired or services rendered regardless of their gender

It is common sense that people cannot be insulted and shamed just because they refused your advances

It is common sense to know that how a girl dresses or act is not an invitation to rape

It is common sense to know that a person can have an opinion on a topic regardless of their gender

Yeah, what feminism has really been doing all this while is to teach us common sense.

5 Life Hacks image

5 Life Hacks

This is a post with tips on how to better your life, it’s a list of things you already know but still need to be reminded every once in a while of their importance in your everyday dealing. The list is by no means exhaustive, but I just find these ones to be very important. Let’s get into it then;

  1. Be Time Conscious- Own at least one “working” wristwatch. Always be punctual. These are things most people take for granted. The truth is people would rather deal with people they know would always be on time than people who aren’t. Knowing how to manage your time also has a positive effect on your productivity.
  2. Dress Appropriately- I’m not here to lecture you about your wardrobe choices or to tell you to ‘dress the way you want to be addressed’ but you don’t show up for a stripper job dressed in a 3 piece suit, same way you shouldn’t go for a bank interview with your pants sagging or your butt crack visible. Your appearance goes a long way in the first impression people have of you.
  3. Act Confident- I said ‘act’ because confidence takes a lot of time to be built for some people, while for others, they have to be in a very comfortable situation for them to feel confident. The easiest thing to do is to apply the ‘fake it till you make it’ motto. Face any situation with your head held up. When meeting people, look them in the eye especially when you talk to them. Most times, acting like you know what you’re doing is all people need to see from you.
  4. Count your Blessings- Most people get hung up on the things going wrong in their life that they forget about the things that are good. Did you lose your job? Did your partner break up with you? Well at least your Twitter and Instagram followers are now more than 2000, and what’s more important than that?
  5. Have Great Friends- This is a much underrated point. You need good friends at every point in your life. It can be your partner, or your parents or anybody. Just have friends you can call to share good news with. Friends you can talk to when you are at your lowest. Friends you can call at 4AM when you can’t sleep just to wake them up just so they can’t sleep either. Friends make life easier.

I know I said 5 but I feel like I need to add this next one

  • Stop Procrastinating- A lot has been said about this that I feel I don’t need to add anything to it.

Procrastination is a thief of time – Wise man

The best way to get something done is to begin – Wiser man

Never leave till tomorrow that which could be done today – Another wise man

Just do it - Nike

You get the point. As I said at the beginning, there are way more than 5 Life Hacks. Knowing them and applying them are two different things. Start applying them.

So, Tell Me About Yourself image

So, Tell Me About Yourself

Yeah I know, this bloody question and the stress it brings, there are 3 ways in which people usually react to this statement

  1. You tell them to ask you exactly what they want to know
  2. You can’t absolutely remember anything about yourself at that moment
  3. You tell the person about yourself

So, what exactly is the problem with this question? Don’t you know about yourself? You’re supposed to be old enough to know these things. #2016Twitter has listed this among the most usual conversation killers, along with ‘send me pictures’ and ‘have you eaten?’. I can’t solve all your problems, you have someone to pray to for that. I’m just here to help you with the ‘tell me about yourself’ conundrum.

In a nutshell, the solution is to make a list of the things you know for certain about yourself, you can write it down or it can be just a mental thing if you’re sure you would remember. If you have written a list of what you know about yourself out, even if it’s just once, it shouldn’t be that hard to recall it when someone asks you. Your list doesn’t have to be exhaustive, you don’t intend to tell the person all about your life. They said ‘tell me about yourself’ not ‘I want your autobiography’. It’s good to have the list ready, because that way you can just pick what you want or don’t want to share with the person asking. And remember that most times, it is actually the random things about you that keeps the conversation going.

Here is an example, this is my list:

  • I love the feel of rain drizzle on my face
  • I don’t eat salad
  • I think the iPhone 4S is still the greatest iPhone ever
  • I don’t watch anything horror
  • I don’t believe in destiny or predestination. Yet.
  • I look good in native. If I do say so myself.
  • I think DPrince’s verse on Wizkid’s ‘Wad up’ is one of the best Nigerian verses ever
  • I’m not really great at anything
  • I think people shouldn’t clap in the cinemas
  • I think people shouldn’t be told how to behave
  • My mum is my favourite person to watch football with
  • I like God-fearing women with a fat ass great personality.
  • I’m scared of dogs
  • I’m a Batman stan
  • I have a niece who I’m certain is the most stubborn 5 year old in the world
  • I can’t dance to save my life
  • I don’t like running into people I know in public

This is all I can remember right now, so maybe this actually doesn’t work you should try yours. Oh yeah, and I support Manchester United.

Women Are Capable image

Women Are Capable

“If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”- Margaret Thatcher.

In a world full of able men there are tons of unheard able women which is very unfortunate because women get tasks done and are passionate about they do. I am not saying that men do not get things done but the specific task of a woman in the creation story was to be a helper to man. As a helper, she is needed to give strength to man to ensure whatever he sets his mind to do is achieved. This much-cherished helper created by God has now been pushed to the back seat of all walks of life because of some ideologies that measure the strength of a woman by her physical structure and appearance. It is funny how foolish we can be because God himself knew woman’s capability when he created her and now we act like we know more than our creator. This demotion to the back seat by the world and men have made women struggle in different areas of life just to prove the world wrong.

I write this article to emphasize that women are capable. Women are stronger than the world imagines which is why no matter the situation life puts them in, they strive till they achieve victory. Women are world changers and are full of compassion for people which is why they seek to provide help whenever and however they can. They are ambassadors of Christ even though they fall, they know their place in Him. Women are used by God to bring back his Adams and all His children to his kingdom. They are mothers of generations which is why they have the ability to reproduce and train up their children to understand that their lives   not only affects them but also their future generations. Women are passionate and caring which is why they give second chances even at the expense of their well-being. Although this wrong, they cannot be blamed always because their hearts are made to be as soft as a jelly bean.

Women, I believe are capable of doing anything no matter what the world limits them to. Look around the world today, women are taking over political positions, moving the healthcare world, setting high records in the economic field, and leading souls to Christ. Women are called to be flexible and capable of taking up different tasks at the same time. Women are called to be friends, mothers, sisters, lovers, workers, world-changers, healers, and teachers. The world needs women because they have all the world needs to be fruitful and multiply. Anyone who disregards the capabilities of a woman needs to reconsider their thoughts because without women, no one would exist in the world today.

Why Men Desperately Need Feminism image

Why Men Desperately Need Feminism

Men and women are biologically, sexually and psychologically different and those are facts, facts beyond human argument. Coming down to economical, mental and political aspects which is in human reach, men and women still aren’t the same but the difference is they could be and they should, which leads us to the feminism movement purely centred on the equality of rights politically, socially and economically between men and women. Women have fought for feminism for almost 200 years with little or no help from men. But this article isn’t for women and it’s not for the ignorant men who have willingly refused to understand feminism, this is for the men who want to understand more and the men who are scared to be labelled feminists. This is what feminism means from the views of a man.

Gender Expectation

Male roles are centred in strength, honour and action, which are healthy themes, but they have all evolved as humans do to concepts such as arrogance, lack of conscience, violence, hyper aggression, objectifying sex and restricting emotions which all fall under the umbrella of hyper masculinity. Young boys are wounded by a world that demands them to be this invisible concepts but ever-present concepts. Emotional neglect is what lays the groundwork for emotional numbing which later explodes into a wild ego of hyper masculine misbehaviour i.e. rape, brutality, rage, discrimination, arrogance and wilful ignorance which are all normalized by people with phrases like “boys will be boys”. These boys become men and these men become responsible for the world. Feminism is a breath of fresh air, a window into the spectrum that gender roles fall into.

Rape Culture and Mental Health

3 out of every 10 men were molested as little children, 1 out of every 10 men has been raped and just 14% of men raped share their experiences. In 2014, 75% of suicides were committed by men, male to female teenage suicide is currently 3:1 and less than 40% of men who died of suicide ever had psychiatric help. Feminism is restructuring gender roles and helping us fine tune what masculinity is defined by. Current male gender roles force a man to always be strong even when he isn’t, to uphold the masculine themes of strength, power and impregnability. But that is a lie, sometimes men are weak and vulnerable and they need help. Vulnerability has been made to look like a limitation but it is purely a symptom that something needs to be handed more delicately. Feminism is also taking men to a higher standard. Women are inherently wrong when raped, wrong for being a woman, wrong for being at the wrong place at the wrong time but why are men allowed to be such savage animals, why aren’t their morals immediately questioned as opposed to the victim?  Instead of attacking the dress codes and morals of women, why do we not attack the vile behaviour of a man to defile a woman? If men take up the role of provider and protector why do we irrationally and unconsciously protect guilty men? Let the standard of feminism teach us better.

Income Inequality

Money is what gives us men the power that we have, it used to be physical power but now it is economical power and giving the right opportunities and a fair playing ground economical power is up for grabs to anyone. In Nigeria, statistics have shown that for every 1 naira made by a woman a man makes 1.08 naira more, though there have been a continuous increase in women who are now in the labour force there haven’t been an increase in women going to school which can be argued that men are encouraged and sponsored more to go to school than women are. Men with children are significantly paid more than women with children in fact statistically their pay reduces after childbirth. Tinuke (2013)

As fathers, brothers and sons we want the best for the women in our lives especially the women who sole breadwinners. Do not handicap women because in this time they carry the same economical and family burden a man carries but are still not eligible for the full economical profits. Let my mother, sister and daughter get what they deserve let them be able to support themselves and the men in their lives not because they have but because they want too. So many men have been forced into a life of crime because of the burden of responsibilities both men and women can share.

Parental Roles

gender roles proposed the current day roles and stereotypes when it comes to parenting. Women were boxed into the role of a domestic caregiver and housekeeper, which left men to be the provider and protector of the family. Thanks to feminism, women can strive to be just more than someone’s wife and someone’s mother, she can aspire to be anything under the sun though, yes, she will still have more obstacles than men would. Nonetheless there is still a stigma on single fathers and stay at home fathers. Fathers who question the idea of the sole custody of their children belonging to their mothers in a divorce, husbands who choose to sacrifice their careers to be a stay at home parent not because they have too but because they want too, fathers who have lost their wives and are pressured to remarry because only a woman can raise a child. Historically speaking yes women do make the best parents because of responsibility was forced on them and it is woven into how they are raised but if we can start to decimate the stigma of men taking on more domesticated paternal roles years to comes things would be much different.

This also applies to single mothers who are looked upon as incapable of keeping a man or labelled a careless slut, which in effect psychologically harms the sons they raise. As they see people subject their mother to stigma and pressure that impairs the way they view themselves and other women. Let feminism embolden men to not also be boxed into categories and stereotypes.

Feminism brings to the table the idea and notion that spectrums exist in the way we identify ourselves. There are no two sides to anything when it comes to human behaviour, there are 7 billion people on this earth and no 2 people act the same way so why do we let culture categorise people before they are even born, before they can even experience life. Human nature isn’t stagnant it is dynamic so social politics should be dynamic also. Feminism is the notion, which highlights that men are from earth, women are from earth deal with it and let everyone live.

A Lot Of Nigerian Teenagers Are Watching Pornography And This Is A Huge Concern image

A Lot Of Nigerian Teenagers Are Watching Pornography And This Is A Huge Concern

Apart from being a business and brand strategist, Subomi Plumptre who heads the corporate and social media practices at Alder Consulting finds the time to tackle some of Nigeria and the world’s problems through her frequent research work.

Not so long ago, I stumbled upon one of her works where she wrote an extensive report on an issue most parents would rather shy away from.

The Rise of Internet Porn & its Generational Impact caught my attention and I began reading. Subomi brought in some hard to argue with facts which initially made me giggle but the afterthoughts sent chills down my spine.

In 2015, the popularity of Nigerian Google searches for porn (relative to other searches) on a scale of 0 to 100 was above 80. (Google ranks as 100 any item that constitutes 10% or more of all searches in a country.) The number of average monthly searches by volume was 135,000 and the States with the greatest popularity for porn searches (from high to low) were: Enugu, Oyo, Ogun, Rivers, Lagos, Abia and Cross River. The relative popularity of rape porn videos was also above 80, with Lagos State leading the charge and in 2014, Nigeria ranked third globally for the most Google searches for Gay Porn. (We were ranked second in 2013.)"

Very disturbing statistics, yes, but it doesn’t stop there, since 2009, porn search popularity has been on a 70% annual increase with Nigeria overtaking the U.S. (a country twice our size and with more than double our internet users) in 2014 and 2015.

Now how does this affect your kids?

Nigerians do not only use the internet, they love it; from bbm to twitter to facebook and instagram, there’s no way you can go a day without checking feeds especially with the current slash in ISP tariff plans. 40% of the Nigerian population have access to the internet and majority of this 40% comprises of the youth because quite simply, they got there first and that’s a truth we all have to live with. While working on the Jack & Jill Therapy platform (a free telephone based platform for those seeking sexual counselling), Subomi disclosed in her report that addiction to porn and masturbation had been the most reoccurring issue but the sad and undeniable fact of this is that habits take quite some time to form and with our kids all exposed to the dangers of direct or indirect pornography, how soon do we expect them to get hooked to this?

Just weeks ago, Subomi had a talk with cable about a friend of hers who happened to have a teenage son. She talked about how she was forced to have “the talk” with the teenager after she caught him watching pornographic material on his mobile phone.

She made mention of how her recent discovery of Game of Thrones; a popular tv show among the teenagers has made her more aware of the position parents should be taking concerning the issue at hand by taking little things like movie restrictions more importantly. She spoke about how Nigerian parents should be there to give the kids knowledge rather than have them find out through the wrong media.

The Importance Of Prayer image

The Importance Of Prayer

We are in the world even though we are not of the world. In order to survive and excel in a world that is not ours we need to stay connected to our original source which is heavenly. One major way of staying connected is through prayer. As we know, people define prayer according to their perspectives. Simply defined, prayer is communicating with God and through this we increase our knowledge of Him, present our thoughts and requests, ask for repentance, and also give thanksgiving. It is so important to pray as it is to eat but unfortunately, many of us discount the importance of this act. Sometimes we cannot be blamed for ignoring the power of prayer because the world makes us believe that we are capable of being successful through hard work and persistence. The truth is, we cannot do anything except through Christ. It is true that we have to work hard and persevere through the process but prayer makes the difference. It distinguishes great works from ordinary works. It elevates situations that have been condemned and reveals situations that are yet to occur to those who are constantly on their knees conversing with their creator. Remember, while Jesus was on earth, He prayed. He prayed all the time because He understood the importance and role of prayer in His life, ministry, and destiny. The same applies to us because we were created in God’s image. Hence, prayer is a necessity for us to overcome the trials and tribulations of the world. Your life should be a life of prayer. Sometimes we do not feel the need to pray because we feel we have prayed enough. This is false because just like it is necessary to begin a new day with new grace from God, it is also necessary to begin each day with new prayers for every situation. Hence, our prayers need to be renewed all the time. In all that we do, when we pray we must understand that our prayers need not be long or short but need to be from a sincere heart. God sees our hearts so He knows which prayer is genuine and which is not.  In our prayer life, there will be challenges and time we do not feel the need to constantly pray but here are five important reasons to constantly pray.

  • Prayer destroys unknown strongholds and powers of the evil one.
  • Prayer protects us evil plots planned for us in advance.
  • Prayer heals our souls and gives us hope in God.
  • Prayers makes people friends of God because they converse constantly with Him and get to know Him personally.
  • Prayer is the key to every situation in and out of our control.

Let us all now approach the throne of God in prayer and rest in His presence with the assurance that prayer is all we need to begin a connection with our creator.

Five Reasons You Should Join the Nigerian Team image

Five Reasons You Should Join the Nigerian Team

Our Family Culture  A.K.A Ohana

I do not know about other countries and peoples, but one important element that matters most in the lives of Nigerians is family. This is a platform where love is shown, tradition is passed down, and memories are shared. There are ups and downs but nevertheless, the family still wins all trials and tribulations. No matter how far any members travels the bond of family still stays strong. We bless one another, comfort ourselves, and make sure that no matter what one does, everyone is carried along hence the Igbo term “OHANA” which implies family and no one is left behind.

Our Sense Of Humour

You can never ever get enough of Nigerian humor. Somebody once said our humor keeps us strong and persistent even in hard times. Our jokes are global and everyone can relate to them. We always have a reason to laugh. One major thing I miss about Nigeria are the jokes and sometimes I feel the urge to teach non-Nigerians the difference between dry statements and actual jokes. Nigerians are just too much when it comes to making anyone laugh and one thing that beats me is the thoughts of those who actually create the jokes. We can just say Nigerians are crazy for laughter.

Our Adorable Jollof Rice and Plantains

It’s all about the Jollof rice and plantains always. With these two, you can join the Nigerian gang. It is so serious that without having these two in any kind of celebration, it can be said that your event flopped badly. Funny enough, this has become a national struggle with our Ghanaian neighbors to see who has the best Jollof rice. You know who has the best already, only NIGERIA.  Please don’t mess with this part of our lives if not our other country members will come after you.

Our Fashion Consciousness

Our fashion game has always been strong for so many years to the extent that people can identify us by our unique ways of dressing. We can never go wrong with slaying when it comes to colors, designs, and accessories. Just for the records, sometimes some of our country members go wrong in this art but eventually bring up new trends. So you see, Nigerians are fashion trend makers.

Our Global Identity

It’s so cool to belong to a country that has its members spread across the globe. As it is casually said, “Nigerians taking over the world”. This is who we are; we dominate, we stand out, and are role models to other people and countries. Anywhere Nigerians are absent should actually not exist because it shows there is nothing really going there. We are global people who continually create opportunities where other people cannot envision progress. We are Nigerians indeed from the land of the Green which signifies growth.

I understand that Nigeria is in a state of turmoil presently but let us not neglect some of our attributes that have kept us going in the struggle. One love Nigeria!

Snoring: It's Not Only For The Plus Sized image

Snoring: It's Not Only For The Plus Sized

We all know someone that snores and it could be very annoying especially for the light sleepers. We’ve all heard different reasons as to why people snore and the most commonly heard is ‘He/She is overweight that’s why they snore’ or ‘I’m very tired’. Well this isn’t entirely true as there are people that aren’t on the plus size and they snore too. So why do people snore? The reason is more complex than just having a long day or being overweight. Snoring occurs as a result of vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping.

Let me explain further, When you fall asleep, the progress is from a light to a deep sleep, and gradually the muscles in the top (roof) of the mouth, throat and the tongue (the pharynx) relax, partially blocking the air-passage inside the throat. These cause the tissues to vibrate: the narrower the passage gets, the greater the vibratory sound. This is also the reason why, if you are overweight, or have a longer uvula (the triangular tissue suspended from the palate) the extra tissues may further narrow the air-passage. That’s the reason why most overweight individuals snore. Asides that, there are various other reasons why people snore;

Why people snore?

  • Being overweight or out of shape.

Fatty tissue and poor muscle tone contribute to snoring. Even if you’re not overweight in general, carrying excess weight just around your neck or throat can cause snoring.

  • Age.

As you reach middle age and beyond, your throat becomes narrower, and the muscle tone in your throat decreases. While you can do anything about growing older, lifestyle changes, new bedtime routines, and throat exercises can all help to prevent snoring.

  • The way you’re built.

Men have narrower air passages than women and are more likely to snore. A narrow throat, a cleft palate, enlarged adenoids, and other physical attributes that contribute to snoring are often hereditary.

  • Nasal and sinus problems.

Blocked airways or a stuffy nose make inhalation difficult and create a vacuum in the throat, leading to snoring.

  • Alcohol, smoking, and medications.

Alcohol intake, smoking, and certain medications, such as tranquilizers like lorazepam and Valium, can increase muscle relaxation leading to more snoring.

  • Sleep posture.

Sleeping flat on your back causes the flesh of your throat to relax and block the airway.

How do we fix it?

So a lot of research has been conducted and different solutions have been devised to cure/stop snoring. Some go as far as purchasing sleeping devices to help them become sound sleepers but end up looking like Darth Vader.

Snoring can be stopped by making certain changes both in one’s everyday life and bedtime rituals before sleeping

Lifestyle changes to stop snoring

  • Lose Weight

If you’re overweight, dropping even a few pounds can reduce fatty tissue in the back of the throat and decrease or even stop snoring.

  • Exercise

This can also help to stop snoring. As well aiding weight loss, exercising your arms, legs, and abs, for example, also leads to toning the muscles in your throat, which in turn can lead to less snoring. There are also specific exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles in your throat.

  • Quit Smoking

Quitting is easier said than done, but smoking irritates the membranes in the nose and throat which can block the airways and cause snoring.

  • Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and sedatives

These relax the muscles in the throat and interfere with breathing. Talk to your doctor about any prescription medications you’re taking, as some encourage a deeper level of sleep which can make snoring worse.

  • Establish regular sleep patterns

Create a healthy bedtime ritual with your partner and stick to it. Hitting the sack in a routine way together can help you sleep better and often minimize snoring.

Bedtime remedies to help you stop snoring

  • Clear nasal passages.

If you have a stuffy nose, rinse sinuses with saline before bed. Using a nasal decongestant or nasal strips can also help you breathe more easily while sleeping. If you have allergies, reduce dust mites and pet dander in your bedroom or use an allergy medication.

  • Keep bedroom air moist.

Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat, so if swollen nasal tissues are the problem, a humidifier may help.

  • Change your sleeping position.

Elevating your head four inches may ease breathing and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward. There are specially designed pillows available to help prevent snoring by making sure your neck muscles are not crimped.

  • Sleep on your side instead of your back.

If you roll over onto your back, wedge a pillow stuffed with tennis balls behind your back. After a while, sleeping on your side will become a habit and you can dispense with the tennis balls.

  • Try an anti-snoring mouth appliance.

These devices often resemble an athlete’s mouth guard and help open your airway by bringing your lower jaw and/or your tongue forward during sleep. While a dentist-made appliance can be expensive, cheaper do-it-yourself kits are also available.

Just incase you were wondering what the breathing facemask and mouthpiece looks like

With these you would at least be able to let other people and even yourself to sleep peacefully without the added background noise.

Basic Things Matter image

Basic Things Matter

We live in a world where basic things have been neglected because we feel that as we advance in life, we need to drop some things we used to do. Just as children, we need to maintain certain habits in order to get through with life. Unfortunately, society has emphasized otherwise and made us feel that it is not acceptable to do things like children who have no worries do. It is written in the bible, “unless you change and become like little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3). This is not only limited to spirituality but also includes our lifestyle. We are made to believe that certain things we used to do are no longer important and this has affected us in various ways. We fail to realize that practicing these basic things does not make us go backward in life, but they remind us of where we are from and help us know how to handle situations when we face challenges.

As you go through life I want you all to remember some of the basic actions that have been neglected by our society which could make a huge difference in our lives if embraced once again.
– It is okay to cry.
– It is okay to share your feelings with people.
– It is okay to be unique and stand out.
– It is okay to fail. What matters is the act carried out after failing.
– It is okay not to be perfect.
– It is okay not to be a doctor, lawyer, and engineer.
– It is okay to pursue your passion over society’s view of the best careers. Just be the best in whatever you do.
– It is okay to pray to the Almighty. I mean, you can’t do it on your own.
– It is okay to be humble.
– It is okay to ask questions about everything.
– It is okay to persevere through difficult times.
– It is okay to spend time with friends and family.
– It is okay to live and live smiling every day.

Passion Burns Faster Than A College Degree image

Passion Burns Faster Than A College Degree

Society places priority on a college degree than on the passion of individuals. As a child who grew up in Nigeria, academics had to come first even before my sleep time. Every time I struggled to make the best grades because I had been taught that my grades defined it all. As l strived to be the best, I realized that experiences and the true essence of learning were the opportunity costs of focusing on the best grades. I began to focus on the grades rather than on the unmeasured knowledge that could be acquired along with the grades. After graduation from high school, I discovered that passion is  beyond grades and certificates. Passion lives inside of everyone and it takes doing what we love to make passion expose itself. I found out that society had not emphasized passion and this had placed detrimental marks on young people, especially teenagers. The differences between passion and grades are so clear that I began to realize a lot of benefits I had missed because of my focus on the wrong thing. Some of these differences include:

  • People are constantly limited to college degrees and the regular cycle of a corporate job, meanwhile, passion makes people accessible to unlimited opportunities to make great impacts in various professional fields.
  •  Passion brings out the best in you while grades cannot do this because there is always a class that will not bring out the best in you.
  • Passion never gives room for failure because it has with it all that you need to success.

Society needs to shift its focus from grades and college degrees to passion because passion burns faster than a college degree. A lot of people go through a higher institution in bondage because they are forced by their family and society to pursue in degrees that bring back the highest paycheck. This idea is destructive and makes many people living deads because they are going through a process without passion and interest. Passion can never be paid for because it is worth more than money can buy. With passion, money should not be a problem because people who follow their passion produce excellent results. Families and society should emphasize passion in order to ensure that people in different professions and fields are not dead from suppression by grades, but alive by the burning fire of passion.

The Root Of Societal Problems image

The Root Of Societal Problems

Today, people complain that society is full of problems and is in a critical condition. We keep criticizing and blaming our government for the dysfunctional state our society has fallen into. One thing we fail to realize is that these leaders come from families. The family has been neglected and pushed aside. Good family living seems to be a thing of the past, but ironically, it is the major cause of the critical issues that are present in our societies.

We need to realize that families, which erupt from marriages, are the greatest gift from God because it comes with blessings. On the contrary, we have families that reflect curses rather than blessings. Divorce and broken homes are so rampant that it seems abnormal to have a peaceful family. A good family is the building block for a good and peaceful society. In order to eliminate societal unrest and discord, the family, which is the root of society’s problems, needs to be worked on.

Bad Breath Can Be Fixed image

Bad Breath Can Be Fixed

So we have to talk about this… Yup, halitosis; the bane of all spoken conversations. We have all been in a situation where a friend has bad breath and because of the fact that he/she is a friend you spare their feelings and decide to not tell them that their mouths smell like a garbage disposal. So you have to suffer in silence till he/she decides to stop speaking or you pick your phone and decide to answer that important phone call from your mum just to end the conversation (torment). Most people don’t know why they have bad breath.. Here are some probable causes

  • Food particles from stinky foods like garlic and onions
  • Smoking
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Acid Reflux
  • Poor Oral Hygiene

So we intend on helping you send across the ‘your breath stinks… here’s how to fix it’ message that is, for those that don’t know they know they have bad breath although I doubt you wouldn’t know that. Anyways let’s assume most people don’t know so here’s how you find out whether or not you’re having a bad breath day.

Ask a friend – As shameful as this may sound it’s actually a sure fire way of finding out if you have bad breath or not. An actual friend shouldn’t have any problem with that although it’s advised to use this method when you’re with a really close friend that way it wouldn’t seem so awkward.

The Sniff Test - If you're looking for a quicker indication of how your breath smells, another option is the sniff test. Easiest ways to do this is to lick your wrist and let it dry for a moment, and then take a whiff. You can also floss between two teeth toward the back of your mouth and smell the floss, or use a tongue-scraper to gently scrape the tongue, and then smell the scraper.

Taste - There are instances when you can actually taste the breath you're omitting. In these cases, the problem is usually caused by something potent you ate, such as garlic, groundnut or fish, or by a condition such as dry mouth or dehydration – the signs of which include thick, foamy saliva and a change in taste. If you have a stale or yucky taste in your mouth, there's a good chance it is reflected in the way your breath smells, too. Hence me saying earlier ‘you probably know when your breath is bad’.

At this point youre probably just looking for solutions to bad breath, some are quite pissed as they’ve tried the obvious solution which is brushing our teeth to no avail. So here are the few things you need to do to remedy your situation

Proper Brushing Technique

Yeah we know, you’re a grownup and you know how to brush your teeth but do you really?. We already know brushing your teeth whisks away odours but we need to brush twice a day; in the morning to prepare you for a new day and at night to brush off all that we have eaten throughout the day. This was actually stated by the National Dental Association. Also while brushing, take extra time to brush your tongue as it is where bad bacteria tend to linger the most after you’re done brushing the teeth and gum line.

See a Dentist twice a year

A really large percentage of people don’t do this as they believe it lacks importance and doesn’t take precedence while in reality it’s of utmost importance to see a dentist regularly. Regular visits to the dentist aid in knowing the state of your mouth, most people believe if they brush their teeth it’s all good not knowing their current toothbrush might be causing internal damages or they have sensitive teeth and their current toothpaste is too acidic. All these can only be found out by seeing a dentist.

Replace Your Toothbrush

If you wait for your semiannual dental checkup to replace your toothbrush with a freebie from the dentist, think again. To keep your breath fresh, use clean oral hygiene tools. When your toothbrush becomes frayed, it's time for a new one. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months not when your bristles are doing the splits.

Regularly Clean Dental Appliances

Just because you wear false teeth or a retainer doesn’t mean you should ignore proper oral hygiene. Dentures and partials require daily cleaning, just as natural teeth. Remove the dental appliances from your mouth to brush them to remove all food particles and plaque which can create bad breath.

Choose Foods Carefully

Naturally certain types of food smell terrible. Seasonings, such as garlic or vinegar, can linger well past mealtime, so eat them sparingly. Also its advised to stay away from sugary or sticky food like taffy as they tend to stay longer on the teeth and are hard to remove.

So follow these few steps and you would definitely have longer conversations and you probably won’t get curved by the person you’re trying to talk to (emphasis on ‘probably’) or if you know a friend that has zombie breath… just send them this link rather than leaving them alone to forever walk the earth with incomplete conversations.

How To Shave Like A Boss image

How To Shave Like A Boss

For those of you who always end up on the wrong side of the blade after shaving (you know with razor bumps and irritations) here’s a few steps and tips on how to shave without those side effects. And for the beardgang faithful, trust me there will come a day in a man’s life where you have to pick up the razor and go bare… you definitely would want to do it write when that day eventually comes. Before we teach you how to shave like a real badass there are few things you would need to successfully complete this feat which are;

  • Badger Brush and bowl: That little brush you kinda never needed at the barber shop.. It’s actually quite important as it is used to apply shaving foam/cream.. yup it’s called a badger brush who knew?!

  • Shaving Foam/Cream: Shaving foam acts as a lubricant for the cutting process and desensitizes skin. There are various brands of shaving cream no particular brand is above the other but I’m quite partial to Gillette.

  • Shaving Stick: Well there are different types of shaving sticks.. There’s the straight razor, the double-edged shaving stick,  the electric shaver, the multiple blade shaving stick with removable blades and then there’s the disposable shaving stick. Depending on your budget and shaving style options could vary.

  • Aftershave: These are products that are applied immediately after shaving to provide some combination of irritation relief, skin moisturizing, and protection from the elements.  Select an aftershave based on how that combination addresses the needs of your skin. Avoid all alcohol-based aftershaves as they tend to damage your skin.

With all these things in hand you’re well on your way to having an epic shave

Here are the steps to shave like a real badass;

STEP 1

Choose the shaver that best fits your needs

Consult a grooming specialist, like a barber who specializes in facial shaves, to understand how your facial hair grows and the correct technique to approach the contours of your face. Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate and has a different texture so be aware of what features benefit you most.

STEP 2

Wash your face with warm water

Washing removes excess oil and dead skin cells, which can interfere with the razor or irritate your gently-scraped skin while simultaneously reducing bacteria that could cause infection. Washing also moisturizes the hair about to be shaved, softening it and making the shave easier. Warm water is the best option when washing your hair pre-shave as it helps soften your follicles and encourage your pores to open, making for a closer shave. Dry-shaving is a sure-fire way to incur razor burn and skin irritation. Always make sure there's at least some lubrication between your skin and razor, even if it's just a splash of water.

STEP 3

Apply the shaving cream to your wet face

Apply the shaving cream liberally over your entire face. Shaving cream softens the hair and moisturizes the skin, but if you're in a pinch, you can also shave with conditioner or even with soap (only if you're really in a pinch). If you are able to buy the mixing bowl, you first wet your badger brush with cold water. Whip the shaving brush around your bowl in a circular motion, agitating the shaving cream. Adding more cool water as much as necessary, whip the shaving cream into a light lather with soft peaks. This should take around 2-3 minutes. Use the shaving brush to work the cream onto your face in a circular motion, going over your entire face multiple times. Let the shaving cream set on your face for 2 minutes as the longer it stands the more moisturised you skin gets.

STEP 4

Hold the razor correctly

If you're using a multi-blade razor, which seems to be the most popular kind, hold the razor with your index finger extended near the top of the shaft, resting the head flat of the razor against the skin. The handle should be raised at an angle of 30 degrees or so.

  • If the cartridge is assisted by a spring to hold flat against skin curves, start shaving with the handle raised enough to compress this spring just a little into its range.
  • Drag the razor handle-first across the skin to shave. Applying pressure is not necessary; pressure or sideways movement can cause cuts. Try to bring the razor as lightly as possible across the surface of your skin.
  • As you practice, you'll be able to set down the razor, pull it across the skin, and raise it up at the end of a stroke in a smooth motion. A rolling razor like a "Headblade" can maintain the proper angle in hard-to-reach areas.

STEP 5

Shave in the proper direction and taut your skin where possible

On the first pass, always shave with the grain. This usually means shaving downward, but not always. Going against the grain (shaving the opposite direction that the hair grows) makes for a closer shave, but it also produces the most irritation and cuts. If you have a tendency to get bumps or rashes, or if you often get ingrown hairs, or if you simply consider your face too pretty to abuse, start shaving with the grain. If your skin is loose in any way, it helps to create a flat, firm surface for the razor to cut across. Right beneath the jawline is a problem-area for many men because it is contoured. When you shave this area, lift the skin on your cheek up so that the skin that was right below your jawline is now right above it. Shave with the grain.

STEP 6

Periodically dip your razor in warm water to free any hairs that have stuck between the blades

You want your blades as clean and uncluttered as possible. Whenever you think there's possible buildup between or underneath your blades, dip and swirl your blades under water. It's usually a good idea to soften the water by adding soap (this will make the water go scummy, but will help protect the blade from the scratchy minerals that tend to dry on after use).

STEP 7

Rinse off the shaving cream with cold water

After you’re done shaving rinse off your face with cold water as cold water closes your pores and makes it more difficult for bacteria to get inside thereby reducing the possibility of irritation. You can also press a cold, wet cloth against your face for five minutes to really seal the deal. Really, the more time you take the better.

STEP 8

Pat dry and moisturize

Don't rub with a towel, as that can irritate the freshly shaved skin. Use a generous amount of moisturizer that is free of perfumes and other potential irritants. Shaving balms based in aloe and tea tree oil can help prevent dry skin and razor burn. Use all-natural products to keep your skin moisturized and healthy, applying a small amount and working it thoroughly around your beard area.

STEP 9

Clean your shaving supplies

Rinse and dry your equipment thoroughly, and store in a dry place. Clean equipment is less likely to introduce bacteria and infection to your open, freshly shaved pores. Change the blades as needed. A dull blade will leave your face feeling raw and sore, and is much more likely to cause razor burn.

So those are the steps needed to be taken if you want to shave like a badass unless you’re a legend like Chuck Norris who tells his beard to fall off.. its advised you follow these few steps.

HAPPY SHAVING

Nigeria Is The 20th Worst Place To Be A Woman image

Nigeria Is The 20th Worst Place To Be A Woman

“If you are a woman living in Nigeria, your life is among the most difficult for women all over the world” Says Thecable.ng

Nigerian women have it tough living in terms of indexes as economic, educational, health and political opportunities, a World Economic Forum (WEF) research has shown.

The global gender gap published in 2015 ranks 145 countries in terms of opportunities available for women to live fulfilling lives and Nigeria came in at 125. In all sub-indexes, Nigeria has decreased since the first publication in 2006, falling seven places from 2014 to land on the 125th position in 2015.

The global struggle for gender equality has been generally slow and according to research done, women earn today what men earned in 2006. According to thecable, in 2006, global average annual earnings for women was $6000 while men earned $11, 000. In 2015, women earned $11,000 and men earned $21,000.

If nothing is done about this pace, WEF says “it will take the world another 118 years – or until 2133 – to close the economic gap entirely”.

“Progress in the economic and political worlds has been proven to be self-reinforcing, so interventions such as quotas – which have been demonstrated to have wider positive effects – offer insight into how the gap could be closed further in future,” WEF said in its report.

But things don’t look so bright for women in Nigeria as the nation’s legislative arm, in March, shut down a bill to promote gender equality in marriage, education and economic opportunities.

Only three countries in Sub-Saharan Africa made it to the top 20 of the general ranking. Rwanda at 6th position, Namibia at 16th position and South Africa at 17th position.  Finally, the lowest performing countries from the region are Nigeria (125) Côte d’Ivoire (133), Mali (137) and Chad (142).
