Soda: The Sweet Poison That’s Going To Kill You image

Soda: The Sweet Poison That’s Going To Kill You

Did you know the recommended sugar intake in a day is 70g for men and 50g for women yet a normal bottle of coke yes I am talking about that plastic bottle one you buy for N150 contains 65g of sugar, that is 17 and a half cubes of sugar.

I understand why people love Sodas; they are everywhere, convenient, tasty, cheap, and that caffeine addiction hits you from nowhere all you coke addicts. Soda companies also pump billions into advertisement and promotions but trust me Shakira did not get that flat tummy from drinking one Pepsi a day.

FOR EVERY REASON YOU LOVE TO DRINK SODA, I CAN GIVE YOU THREE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

Firstly, Soda is useless

Containing no nutritional value whatsoever, it is made of filtered water and refined sugar. This is almost as good as drinking a bottle of water and popping sugar cubes into your mouth.

Weight Gain and Obesity

The link between soft drinks and weight gain has been scientifically proven.  One of the first guidelines my gym instructor gave me was never drink your calories, rather eat them. A can of sprite contains 140 calories in comparison with a roasted chicken leg that has 45 calories, or even a banana, which contains 89 calories and costs a lot less.

Drinking one can of cola a day for four weeks is equivalent to ingesting 3,920 extra calories, or a gain of 1.1 pounds if the calories are not burned. A 160-pound person must walk for 27 minutes at 3.5 miles per hour to burn off the calories in one can of cola, according to the calorie-expenditure analysis provided by the MayoClinic.com. Now do you really want to be that person?

Diabetes

Linked to number #2. Consumption of sugar on such a high level increases your risks of developing non-insulin dependent diabetes, or type 2 diabetes. Keep in mind artificially sweetened beverages are not healthy alternatives to sugar sweetened drinks for the prevention of diabetes. Best to just grab a bottle of water with your lunch.

Damage to teeth

Soda eats up the tooth enamel doubling the chances of tooth decay. Calcium is an essential mineral for strong bones and teeth. Consuming high amounts of phosphoric acid, a common ingredient in sodas, can deplete the calcium from your bones and decrease calcium absorption. Makes a mental note of how expensive a visit to the dentist is

Dehydration

You lose water when you sweat, urinate and even breathe. Sodas are often consumed in the place of water, which is where the problem starts. Sodas contain high level of caffeine, which acts as a diuretic, increasing urinating and leaving the body with less fluid. Diet Sodas are just as bad because of their high level of sodium, which draws water from the cells and promotes dehydration.

Soo many other healthy alternatives to drinking Sodas exist. Water is the best drink in the world, it clears your skin, it increases your metabolic rate and the list can go on. Second best comes in at Tea; herbal, green or black, it is filled with antioxidants that are good for the body. Lastly, 100% Juice not the type mixed with preservatives is great for a tasty drink with your lunch.

Is Your Coffee Killing You? image

Is Your Coffee Killing You?

From the cultivation of the first grain of coffee bean in Ethiopia in the 11th century, its most common product; coffee - a brewed drink prepared from its roasted form- has grown to become the world’s seventh largest legal agricultural export by value (according to reports in 2005). With consumption rate standing at 141.6 million bags of beans this year, this value is expected to rise by 25% over the next five years because of the westernization of societies in India, China and Latin America according to International Coffee Organization (ICO) Director, Roberio Silva.

Besides being a beverage used to deduce if a society is westernized, it’s become a habit for countless people worldwide as they cannot help but start the day with a jolt of caffeine (Coffee’s most popular constituent). A habit that is still being debated if to be classified as good or bad due to the fact that caffeine albeit “Generally recognized as safe” by the food and drug administration has been discovered to have negative effects coupled with its constant medical and performance enhancing uses. It can be used medically to prevent Parkinson’s disease, gallstones, type 2 diabetes and in the treatment of ADHD, obesity and low blood pressure. A central nervous system stimulant, caffeine reduces physical fatigue, prevents drowsiness, increases focus and can delay sleep.

Negative side effects of coffee consumption include:

Caffeinism

Somewhat related to the addiction, this effect occurs in adults who consume more than six cups daily making them totally dependent on coffee consumption along with symptoms such as anxiety and agitation.

Digestion

Consumption of coffee on an empty stomach leads to the production of Hydrochloric acid which is an essential part of the digestion process. Its early production due to coffee consumption may reduce the amount produced when a meal is consumed thereby delaying food digestion.

Mineral Absorption

Coffee may affect the kidneys ability to retain calcium, zinc, magnesium and other important minerals therefore making it difficult for heavy coffee drinkers to get enough materials from their food and even supplement.

Acrylamide

A potential carcinogenic substance formed when coffee beans are roasted at high temperature, acrylamide has been shown to be a product of coffee. Its level is dependent on how dark the roast it

Tension and Stress

Although drinking coffee can make us productive, lots of it will increase the release of stress hormones cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine in the body. Chemicals that increase the body’s heart rate, blood pressure, tension level and have long term health implications.

Most of the aforementioned side effects of coffee are results of excessive consumption. It is therefore advised that for long term productivity, coffee consumption should be at most four Cups daily.

11 Incredible Benefits of Green Tea image

11 Incredible Benefits of Green Tea

Dating back to 2737 BC and originating from China, Green tea is the healthiest and oldest beverage on the planet.

Green tea was used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine to control bleeding, heals wounds, improve heart and mental health, aid digestion and many more. Made from un-oxidized leaves, it is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have positive effects on the body.

Here we take a look at the benefits of Green tea that have been confirmed in recent human research studies, maybe they can convince you to ‘’go green’’.

Fat Burner

If you look at the ingredients lists for any fat burning supplement, chances are that green tea will be on there. Green tea has thermogenic and catechins properties that increase fat oxidation and raises metabolic rates. However, some studies don’t show any increase in metabolism, so the effects may depend on the individual. Don’t be too sad about this regular green tea is 99.9% water and provides 1 calorie per 100 ml serving, just replace your sugary drinks for green tea anyway.

Cancer Fighter

According to the National Cancer Institute, the polyphenols in tea have been shown to decrease tumour growths. Researchers believe that it is the high level of polyphenols in tea can help kill cancerous cells and stop them from growing. The direct mechanism of cancer prevention hasn’t yet been fully established but the good news is there is a relationship between cancer prevention and tea consumption.

Dr Katherine Crew, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University, also conducted a study in men with prostate cancer and found that green tea drinkers had markedly lower prostate-specific antigen, which is linked to prostate tumour growth.

Oral Health

Streptococcus mutans is the primary harmful bacteria found in the mouth. It causes plaque formation and is a leading contributor of cavities and tooth decay. The Catechins in green tea inhibit the growth of bacteria, which lowers the risks of infections and improves dental health. The antioxidants also work as anti-inflammatory on the gums and help reduce the chances of oral cancer while reducing bad breath.

Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a disease that has been affecting more people in the past decade with about 300 million people worldwide having blood sugar problems. Some controlled experiments have shown that green tea can cause mild reductions in blood sugar levels, which lowers the risk of developing type II diabetes in the long term. One study in Japanese individuals found that those who drank the most green tea had a 42% lower risk of developing sugar related problems.

Heart Health

A 2013 review of studies found that green tea helped prevent a range of heart related issues, from high blood pressure to congestive heart failure and even strokes. Green tea also dramatically increases the antioxidant capability of the blood, which protects the LDL cholesterol particles from oxidation, which is one part of the pathway towards heart disease. Given the beneficial effects on risk factors, it is not surprising to see that green tea drinkers have up to a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. According to the Harvard Heart Letter doctors found that those that drank green tea had significantly wider arteries, meaning lower risk in heart diseases like atherosclerosis.

Nectar of Youth

Of course, we all have to die eventually. That is inevitable. However, given that green tea drinkers are at a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, it makes sense that it could help you live longer. As mentioned earlier, green tea is packed with antioxidants, and one major cause of aging is oxidation by free radicals. According to the San Francisco Gate, a study from the University of Campbell found that Japanese practitioners of a green tea ceremony showed longer life spans. If you think that’s the best part green tea can also make the skin more resistant to premature skin aging due to the catechins found present in it.

Anti- Anxiety and Relaxation

Have you ever heard Sheldon from big bang theory say the best thing to offer a stressed person is a cup of tea? Well he’s not too far from the truth, offer them green tea and marvel at the results.

A study published in the Journal of Trends in Food Science & Technology by Dr.Juneja and team states that theanine acts as a neurotransmitter that increases alpha waves in the brain. Alpha waves are considered to be an indicator of relaxation. Human volunteers were given 50-200 mg of l-theanine and were shown to have increased alpha waves without drowsiness.

So it appears you can drink green tea to help mellow you out, without falling asleep.

Anti Bacterial

Green tea contains other antioxidants called catechins. According to a study published in the Food Science Technology Bulletin, these catechins specifically epigallocatechingallate (EGCG) and epicatechingallate (ECG), can hinder development of many bacterial species. These catechins can stick themselves into the films that cover the bacteria. By lodging into the outside layers of bacteria, EGCG and ECG may upset the bacteria from doing what it is supposed to, which is making you ill.

Brain Enhancement

Green tea does more than just keep you awake; it can also make you smarter. Green tea contains amino acid L-theanine, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. L-theanine increases the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. It also increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain

A research team said their findings suggest that green tea could be promising in the treatment of cognitive impairments associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as dementia.

Anti oxidants

Well, when we eat, our bodies have to turn food into energy. As a result, this generates some by products within our bodies called free radicals. These chemicals are pretty awful, and can severely damage our bodies through a process called oxidation. Free radicals are also, theoretically, the main driver in aging.

But have no fear, we can combat the negative effect of free radicals by consuming antioxidants, and one great way to do this is by drinking green tea. It is loaded with polyphenols like epigallocatechingallate (EGCG), flavonoids and catechins, which function as powerful antioxidants. These substances can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protecting cells and molecules from damage.

Try to choose a higher quality brand of green tea, because some of the lower quality brands can contain excessive levels of fluoride. That being said, even if you choose a lower quality brand, the benefits still far outweigh any risk.

Memory

Green tea boosts the neural juice that fuels memory. Well according to a study from the Department of Psychiatry, University of Basel Switzerland, sipping on green tea enhances memory.  Until last year, the effects of green tea on cognitive function were speculative, but with the improvements in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Dr. Stefan Borgwardt could view the increased connectivity in the cortices of the brain after consumption of green tea. Specifically, green tea drinkers showed increased connectivity in key parts of the brain associated with memory. It’s important to underscore that the researchers used green tea extract, and you’d have to drink several cups of regular green tea to get the same amount of the active ingredient that’s most likely responsible for the effects which is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG).

If green tea were a celebrity, it would already sit near the tippy top of the A-list. Its active ingredients have been linked to an array of health benefits. Definitely worth going green.

Everything You Need To Know About Gynecomastia Or ‘Man Boobs’ image

Everything You Need To Know About Gynecomastia Or ‘Man Boobs’

Gynecomastia or ‘man boobs’ is a very common condition that occurs in growing boys and much older men. It is signified by a prominent increase in one or both breasts and could be caused by several reasons; some physiological and others pathological. Pathological causes involve an imbalance between the activities of androgens and oestrogens.

Epidemology

  • At least 50% of adolescent boys will experience gynecomastia.
  • It is a common condition thought to be present in a third of men in the course of their life.
  • It is a non-cancerous condition. Breast cancer is detected in only 1% of male breast enlargement.
  • Prevalence of asymptomatic gynaecomastia is reported as 60-90% of neonates, 50-60% of adolescents, and 70% in men aged 50-69.

What Are The Signs?

If the name ‘Man boobs’ is any indication, gynecomastia signs vary from sightings of extra tissues around the nipples or other parts of the breasts. These tissues can be tender or painful. Dimpling of the skin and retraction of the nipple are not typical findings. Milky discharge also isn’t a prominent feature except for individuals with prolactin secreting tumor.

Causes

Oestrogen stimulates breast tissue growth whilst androgens inhibit it. The moment there is an unhealthy imbalance in the ratio of oestrogen to androgens, gynecomastia is around the corner. The ratio can be altered by the action of testosterone or enhanced oestrogen or both and therefore, it may be caused by:

  • Conditions which cause raised oestrogen levels
  • Conditions which cause low testosterone levels
  • Conditions which cause androgen resistance
  • Conditions which cause an increased conversion of androgens to oestrogens.

Gynecomastia arises solely from hormonal imbalance but here are some factors could contribute to this development.

Obesity

When you are overweight, you can’t escape from breast fat but not all of them are due to obesity, so trying to lose weight might not help you. The reason is simple; being overweight can increase your oestrogen levels and cause breast tissues developing.

Puberty

During puberty, hormone levels in teenage boys usually vary. Many teenage boys have some degree of gynecomastia. This is due to the fluctuation in the testosterone level, if the testosterone level drops, oestrogen can cause breast tissues to grow but that usually clears up over time when the hormones become more stable.

Older Age

As boys become men and men become even older men, they produce less testosterone which causes hormonal imbalance and could lead to the development of breast fat. Another contributing factor is the fact that as men get older, they develop more fat because of a less active lifestyle and this can lead to more oestrogen been produced.

This isn’t worth mentioning but for completion, newborn baby boys also experience gynecomastia because oestrogen passes through the placenta from the mother to the baby. This usually clears up within a few weeks.

Other causes include:

  • Infection in the testicles
  • Side effect of medication like anti-ulcer drugs or drugs for heart diseases.
  • Cannabis or anabolic steroids
  • Too much alcohol
  • Kidney failure or liver disease

Treatment

  • Medication to resolve hormonal imbalance
  • For severe cases, surgery is needed to remove excess breast fat.

If you are worried about your breast growth, see your GP. Your GP will tell you everything you need to know (most of which can be found here) and further indigenous treatment options you can’t find on the internet.

This NGO Is The Face Of Mental Awareness In Nigeria image

This NGO Is The Face Of Mental Awareness In Nigeria

It always starts with not knowing, doesn’t it? Especially when excuses become likely but as we’ve all come to accept, ignorance isn’t an excuse anymore.

Let’s task our minds a bit.

Imagine waking up to find that by no fault of yours, you can no longer smile; you feel unnecessary guilt; don’t feel like doing anything at all; and you are getting irritated far too easier than normal. You don’t have a fever; you are not coughing, but somehow food no longer appeals to you.

Imagine having to feel that way for a week, then a month, then some more.

Imagine not knowing why exactly you feel that way or have anyone to talk to about your issues.

Imagine finding out that you are indeed, sick, and still not be able to tell someone about it.

Then the voices in your head start to have a voice. They torment you with persecutory thought insertions. Insomnia follows; no interest in anything pleasurable.

Imagine finding out about a terminal illness, but not having someone to take care of you because of societal stereotypes.

That’s just a glimpse into what people suffering from mental illnesses have to deal with and more so, in this part of the world.

Contrary to popular opinion, mental illness isn’t madness. Yes, shocking. What’s actually shocking is that there are more mentally ill people at home than on the streets and in the markets. It’s clear that people need to start taking their mental health serious.

Mental illness is likened to the cancer of the mind; one that has been cruelly and unfairly neglected in our society even with the advent of civilization and education. We need to do more. We need to understand that with the way the world is set up right now, it’s important to be in optimal health; physically, and mentally. There’s the need for everyone to agree that health isn’t complete if we can’t maintain healthy minds.

In making conscious efforts to create awareness and take a stand to end stigma, a few of us decided to institute a platform to reach out as advocates for mental health. We formed a non-governmental organization whose primary goal is to take advantage of the reach that social media offers to enlighten people about the importance of maintaining optimal mental health.

Using campaigns that run every other month and sometimes throughout the year, we will look to engage with people, using both online and offline events.

We hope to impact people’s line of thoughts positively even as we advocate for greater focus on our mental health by the government.

To become a part of this great and long overdue cause, do visit:

Ever Heard Of Piebaldism? image

Ever Heard Of Piebaldism?

So, I had an assignment to write anything health and I was going to write on the “Ear wax”. Believe me I had ready, until a day back when out of boredom I was going through my Instagram feeds and I bumped into the post picture. The moment I saw this picture on the post I was stunned, literally so much beauty in one photograph. And my curiosity grew even more to know what “piebaldism” was, and so the birth of this post. I guess we all need a brief education on piebaldism.

What Is Piebaldism?

First off, Piebaldism is a rare autosomal dominant trait characterized by the congenital absence of melanocytes in affected areas of the skin and hair. A white forelock of hair, often triangular in shape, may be the only manifestation, or both the hair and the underlying forehead may be involved.

The eyebrows and the eyelashes may be affected. Irregularly shaped white patches may be observed on the face, trunk and the extremes will include a symmetrical distribution. Basically, islands of hyperpigemtation are present within and at the border of depigmented areas. It may also be known as PBT and Piebald trait.

Frequency

The prevalence of piebaldism is unknown, which is there is no statistical data proven on the occurrence of piebaldism.

Genetic changes

Piebaldism can be caused by mutations in the KIT and SNAI2 genes. However, piebaldism may also be feature of other conditions:

  • Waardenburg syndrome
  • Vitiligo
  • Piebald ( in animals )

Inheritance pattern: Piebaldism is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern; this means one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder.

Treatment & Management

  • Diagnostic Tests
  • Drug Therapy
  • Surgery and Rehabilitation
  • Genetic Counselling
  • Palliative Care

Quite an education I must say, but at the end of the day it pays to know. I wouldn’t want us to rely solely on this post for an education on Piebaldism, and its other related disorder. We should also look it up and read more on it considering the fact that this information shouldn’t be used as a substitute for professional medical advice but as enlightenment.

People with piebaldism, vitiligo or waardenburg syndrome shouldn’t have a stigma on them. I guess it’s human to be a little worried, but that shouldn’t turn to pity. I feel they deserve the same amount of love given to people without the disorder. They are even more beautiful with their disorder, there’s enough love in the air to share, so let’s not be biased or ignorant. Understanding that no one is perfect, we all having our own fault and are beautiful in our unique ways.

10 Health Benefits Of Consuming Marijuana image

10 Health Benefits Of Consuming Marijuana

4/20 is upon us. If you don’t know what four-twenty is then i'll educate you a little.

4/20 is the day that has been embraced by pot smokers over the past years as weed day. It is day where people who identify with the cannabis culture light one up – recovering addict or not.

With the decriminalization of marijuana and the legalization of weed for medicinal or recreational purpose in some parts of the world, lighting a blunt in public doesn’t seem to raise much alarm but with people being more open to consumption of marijuana, celebrating the annual 4/20 still remains a big deal to most pot consumers.

What’s the Origin?

4/20 gets its name from five High school friends collectively called the Waldos in San Rafael, California. The code first came about in the fall of 1971 because the Waldos planned to meet at a statue of Louis Pasteur at the school at 4:20 before they went on an expedition to score some free weed from a plot of marijuana plants abandoned by a Coast Guard service member.

In celebration of 4/20 this year, we run you down a list of things... good things... healthy things cannabis consumption could do to your body. You might be surprised to find out that amongst all the terrible things they say about marijuana consumption, it actually helps a lot if consumed sensibly.

It may help improve lung health and palliate or even reverse carcinogenic effects of tobacco

As published by the American Medical Association in January 2012, marijuana which is believed to be a lung killer actually improves lung capacity. Researchers looking into the risk factors of heart disease tested the lung function of 5,115 young adults over the course of 20 years. Tobacco smokers lost lung function over time, but pot users actually showed an increase in lung capacity.

These could easily be because of the inhalation of weed which requires a longer drag than tobacco.

It controls epileptic seizures

The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics published in 2003, showed how marijuana extracts helped in controlling seizures by using epileptic rats as test subjects and the results showed conclusively that marijuana does indeed cure epilepsy for about 10 hours depending on the amount taken.

A special chemical found in marijuana stops cancer from spreading

CBD may help prevent cancer from spreading, researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported in 2007.

According to Business Insider, Cannabidiol stops cancer by turning off a gene called Id-1, the study, published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, found. Cancer cells make more copies of this gene than non-cancerous cells, and it helps them spread through the body.

The researchers studied breast cancer cells in the lab that had high expression levels of Id-1 and treated them with cannabidiol. After treatment the cells had decreased Id-1 expression and were less aggressive spreaders.

In "WEED," Gupta also mentioned a few studies in the U.S., Spain, and Israel that suggest the compounds in cannabis could even kill cancer cells.

Proper usage decreases anxiety

Weed when consumed sensibly reduces anxiety. Medical marijuana users claim the drug helps relieve pain and suppress nausea — the two main reasons it's often used to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy.

In 2010, researchers at Harvard Medical School suggested that some of the drug's benefits may actually be from reduced anxiety, which would improve the smoker's mood and act as a sedative in low doses.

THC slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease

Amyloid plaques are the main precursors of the Alzheimer’s disease. They are formed in the brain and kill off brain cells thus aggravating Alsheimer’s. THC, tetrahydrocannabinol an active component of weed slows down the formation of the amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme that makes them thus making Alzheimer spread less rapidly.

It improves your metabolism

A study published in the American Journal Of Medicine on April 15, 2013 suggested that pot smokers are skinnier than the average person and have healthier metabolism and reaction to sugars, even though they do end up eating more calories because of the munchies.

Marijuana brings out your creative side

Contrary to stoner stereotypes, marijuana usage has actually been shown to have some positive mental effects, particularly in terms of increasing creativity. Even though people's short-term memories tend to function worse when high, people get better at tests requiring them to come up with new ideas.

One study tested participants on their ability to come up with different words related to a concept, and found that using cannabis allowed people to come up with a greater range of related concepts, seeming "to make the brain better at detecting those remote associations that lead to radically new ideas," according to Wired.

Other researchers have found that some participants improve their "verbal fluency," their ability to come up with different words, while using marijuana.

Part of this increased creative ability may come from the release of dopamine in the brain, lessening inhibitions and allowing people to feel more relaxed, giving the brain the ability to perceive things differently.

Weed helps the brain recover from a stroke

Research from the University of Nottingham shows that marijuana may help protect the brain from damage caused by stroke, by reducing the size of the area affected by the stroke — at least in rats, mice, and monkeys.

This isn't the only research that has shown neuro-protective effects from cannabis. Some research shows that the plant may help protect the brain after other traumatic events, like concussions.

Marijuana helps in fighting alcoholism

Marijuana is safer than alcohol. That's not to say it's completely risk free, but it's much less addictive and doesn't cause nearly as much physical damage.

Disorders like alcoholism involve disruptions in the endocannabinoid system. Because of that, some people think cannabis might help patients struggling with those disorders.

According to Business Insider, research in Harm Reduction Journal shows that some people use marijuana as a less harmful substitute for alcohol, prescription drugs, and other illegal drugs. Some of the most common reasons for patients to make that substitution are the less adverse side effects from marijuana and the fact that it is less likely to cause withdrawal problems.

Some people do become psychologically dependent on marijuana, and this doesn't mean that it's a cure for substance abuse problems. But, from a harm-reduction standpoint, it can help.

Weed helps relieve pain caused from chemotherapy and stimulates appetite

One of the most well-known medical uses of marijuana is for people going through chemotherapy.

Cancer patients being treated with chemo suffer from painful nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. This can cause additional health complications.

Marijuana can help reduce these side effects, alleviating pain, decreasing nausea, and stimulating the appetite. There are also multiple FDA-approved cannabinoid drugs that use THC, the main active chemical in marijuana, for the same purposes.

With all these said, i wish you a happy 4/20. Have fun and light one up.....or two.

People Are Eating Their Placentas Now And It's Actually Healthy...Weird But Healthy

The placenta is that flattened circular organ in the uterus of pregnant mammals nourishing and maintaining the fetus through the umbilical cord. The placenta does more than just connect the developing fetus to the uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, it also provides thermo-regulation to the fetus, waste elimination, and gas exchange via the mother's blood supply, fight against internal infection and produce hormones to support pregnancy.

Now although in most parts of the world, people dispose of the placenta after childbirth but there’s a new and emerging trend called Placentopaghy and it involves eating the placenta of your young after childbirth. It’s easy to discard this as another “white” nonsense but it actually has its benefits which experts are still struggling to confirm.

Those who believe in placentophagy say it raises breast milk quantity, energy and could level off your hormones, lowering your chances of postpartum depression and insomnia after childbirth.

A lot of popular celebrities have flirted with the idea of placenta eating. Zim Zolciak, Holly Madison, Gaby Hoffman, Mayim Bialik, Tamera Mowery, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian have all tried placentophagy...

doesn’t sound so crazy now huhn?

How do i eat my Placenta?

There’s a lot of ways to do this which ranges from baking to frying to boiling... Hell, some even make smoothies out of it but the most common and least disgusting way of consuming the placenta is by having it made into pills, yes, placenta pills is a thing too.

Apparently, the placenta provides you with mineral, vitamin and protein supplement which helps your postnatal self recover painlessly... ian't that something you could do with proper diet and a good hobby?

Male Birth Control Pills Are Coming Faster Than You Think image

Male Birth Control Pills Are Coming Faster Than You Think

Vasalgel, a non-hormonal male contraceptive owned by the medical research organisation THE PARSEMUS FOUNDATION is set to hit the market in 2018 for men who find wearing condoms uncomfortable or not satisfying enough.

Over the years, birth control organisations have shifted their focus on women but the simple truth is that it’s just as concerning to men as it is to women.

Vasalgel is essentially a polymer that’s injected under local anesthetic into the man’s sperm-carrying tubes, accessible through the scrotum — not in his penis or testicles as some authors have erred. It works by blocking sperm and is expected to be reversible through a second injection that dissolves the polymer.

Its efficacy and full reversibility have not been proven yet but trials later this year will ensure the public know what they are getting into once they decide to get the pill.

According to Telegraph Uk, Another advantage of Vasalgel is that while it blocks sperm, other fluid can still pass through. This should reduce any risk of pain due to back pressure, an occasional issue with vasectomies. This could make Vasalgel a best-seller, even among men seeking a permanent contraceptive option.

There are other options and among them is Gendarussa, another non-hormonal contraceptive, has gone through phase II human trials in Indonesia. The method is hypothesised to work by preventing the sperm’s ability to fertilise an egg.

Vasalgel is set to begin trials later this year and enter the market in 2018 if results are positive.

Starch: We Consume Too Much Of It But Can We Really Help It? image

Starch: We Consume Too Much Of It But Can We Really Help It?

Starch is a part of the total carbohydrate (fibres, starch and sugar). One-third of our food should come from starchy foods. These food types are good sources of energy, as well as the main sources of nutrients in our diets. Examples of the starchy food we consume include: brown rice, pasta, noodles, millet, sorghum, oats, barleys, potato, yam, cassava, corn, plantain, green bananas, whole wheat bread etc. When this food is eaten, they are broken down into sugar in our bodies. Therefore, consuming excess starch is synonymous to consuming excess sugar. This results in increasing your blood sugar level.

How We Consume Excess Starch

Practically every Nigerian consumes starch every day but just how much starch is too much starch? The answer to that isn’t as straightforward as one might think as it depends on genetic factors, body fat percentage, exercise and even type of job, especially sports men and women. Reasons why we consume this particular polysaccharide in excess are listed below:

  • Socio-economic factors: This is dependent on the personnel income. Food is a major necessity in the human race which is required for sustainability on earth. it is no respecter of class because we satisfy this need at all cost. Low income earners who try as much as possible to provide the three square meal a day are at greater risk of becoming obese if they do not balance their diets.
  • Eating disorder and night-eating syndrome: Most times we want to keep our mouth busy just to stay awake or probably do some dieting to keep fit so we skip breakfast. It is quite good but it has its side effects on both our physical and mental being.
    • Late-night snacking: This is commonly found among the undergraduates and working class who try as much as possible to meet up with an assignment, preparation for an examination, seeing a movie or having a presentation at the least possible hour.
    • Over-eating: This could be as a result of how famished one can be and also how delicious a meal can be. Most of the time, overeating comes when one gets a free food ’awoof’ from a friend’s place or even at a party, let’s face it, party food is always sweeter.
  • Home environment: The choice of location can have an indirect effect on one’s diet or eating habits. The proximity to the market enables one to have the best of fresh food and balanced meals such that it becomes difficult to settle for the processed food. This also reduces the rate at which one visits restaurants.

Healthier Alternatives To Smoking

Smoking kills, practically everyone is aware of this fact but any smoker will tell you that with every stick, it gets increasingly difficult to quit. The smoking prevalence for Nigeria given by the World Health Organization was 10.49 percent for male and 0.9 percent for female by 2009 but with millions picking up this killer habit daily, these figures are on the rise. Now, you may think 10.49 percent shouldn’t be regarded as a lot but that counts for at least 16.7 million Nigerians.

Toxicology research carried out shows that smoking kills you by the minute. Chemicals which cause a wide range of cancers form rapidly after smoking.

The researchers looked at the level of chemicals linked with cancer, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), in 12 patients after smoking.

A PAH was added to the subject's cigarettes, which was then modified by the body and turned into another chemical which damages DNA and has been linked with cancer.

The research shows this process only took between 15 and 30 minutes to take place.

Smoking just doesn’t cause cancer in the long run; it also could lead to heart disease, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), stroke, asthma, Premature Low Birth-Weight Babies, Diabetes and frankly, the list goes on.

WHY DO PEOPLE SMOKE?

Most people pick up smoking during their younger years or while in universities and have struggled to quit several times because smoking is super addictive. At such a young age, you don't really think about the health risks of smoking and you certainly do not realise how addictive smoking can be. As a teenager you probably think that you can try smoking a few times and then take it or leave it.

Nicotine being an addictive substance doesn’t take long to begin manifesting that trait with smokers capable of experiencing withdrawal symptoms within a short time after first use.

There are a handful of reasons why people find themselves smoking, here are a few:

Peer pressure: Many children decide to smoke because their friends do. Most of these children continue to smoke because they grew up around people who do (parents or siblings) and do not see the big deal, after all they aren’t alone.

As far as children go, some children pick up smoking to rebel against authorities while others do to look mature and cool.

Stress and personal problems: Adults pick up smoking for entirely different reasons mostly because of stress caused by economic reasons and more personal problems. They may be homeless or living with parents, unemployed or underpaid, dealing with relationship problems or bad marriages. When one is confronted with these sorts of problems, a stress relief will not be far away and smoking does offer a temporary escape from these problems.

There are some people who smoke because they just love to; some say it gives them pleasure.

HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVES TO SMOKING

Sugarfree Gum: Many smokers see cigarettes as pacifiers that satisfy their lips’ need to be engaged. Scientists have found that it's not just the nicotine in cigarettes that gets people hooked - it's the oral fixation; i.e. the sensation of having something in the mouth as well.

Sugarfree gum is a perfect alternative for such people as it satisfies the lips’ need to be engaged and keeps the acidity levels in the mouth balanced and is good for your teeth and gums, unlike cigarettes.

Dark Chocolates: The nicotine in cigarettes releases dopamine, a compound that causes the feeling of joy, pleasure and satisfaction in the body. Eating dark chocolates increases the dopamine levels in the brain just like cigarettes do and is a delicious substitute to smoking but shouldn’t be overdone.
